Why do so many houses have the stove with no ventilation???

Multiple houses in a row I’ve seen people put a cooking range on the kitchen island with no ventilation hood above. Do people not actually cook? Enjoy having grease splatter everywhere and get on all your furniture/walls/ceiling plus the cooking smell lingering for hours.

Some of the kitchens have high ceilings too so you probably can’t even install a hood vent.

They probably have a downdraft system.

Are you talking about gas stoves or electric?

Because they are cheap and only care about what the kitchen looks like, not how functional it is. Installing a ventilation hood with outdoor venting is a few thousand dollars.

+1. Do you not know about downdraft, OP?

Good venting is a must. But, a lot of people just don't cook with grease or at high temperatures. I'm not splattering grease everywhere in my house. I hate the smell and the oil even with a great vent and opening some windows! I'm not so desperate for fried food that I need to deal with all that.

I can confirm many do not have downdraft. And downdraft isn’t as effective as something above it to capture the smoke and fumes.

+1, I cook a lot but rarely with a lot of smoke or grease. My vent is really high-powered and noisy so I don't put it on unless I have to. (I wouldn't want to be without it - but practically speaking it doesn't get used much.)

We have a downdraft in our new house that works better than the ceiling vent did in our old house.

Are you OP? How can you confirm this? Is this a troll post?

My parents have an amazing downdraft system.

Most building codes will require an exhaust/ventilation system. If you are visiting homes to buy, ask the realtor to tell you how the kitchen is ventilated.

I don’t have a vent. I don’t really use “grease” or produce grease. I use oil very sparingly and don’t cook fatty foods.

I don't cook high heat, high fat food. So smells are never a problem.

We dont have one. Didnt know it was possible to not have one and assumed it went out like every other kitchen.
Learned quickly that ours does not vent.
Not in our budget to reconfigure that.
