When my kid got in, it was 2 weeks to decide. They hold an admitted students day during that timeframe. |
If your kid is undecided, definitely do the admitted students day. Mine found it really helpful. Also, I think on facebook there may have been some open TJ threads where people were willing to answer questions from prospective students/parents - that was helpful too I thought. |
Thanks! |
| When do they wrap up admissions? How many rounds of waitlists do they do? |
The waitlist goes into the summer. If you do not get in during regular admissions process, it could be a blessing in disguise. -The froshmores (sophomore admits) have several advantages. -They are selected by the faculty rather than the FCPS criteria, so you are already pretty sure that you can handle the rigor (and indeed, the froshmores tend to be in the top end of the grade distribution). -They generally have straight A's in classes they took at their base school. They also had a two phase increase in rigor, first going from middle school to base high school, then going from base high school to TJ. So their GPASs tend to benefit from the more gradual increase in rigor. -They don't see the 50-100 TJ freshmen that do not return for their sophomore year so they are never lulled into a sense of false security that these kids will fill up the bottom end of the grade distribution. -They appreciate and take advantage of the differences between TJ and base schools, particularly the peer group. The downsides are clubs. A lot of clubs fill up and don't always make room for the froshmores. Some of the academic teams don't save spots for froshmores despite the generally stronger academics of froshmores. But there are so many other activities you can choose that this is not a really limiting factor. |
Do you know if APS sends students to an admitted student day? |
They are selected by faculty recommendations at the base high school? |
Yes, all admitted students will be invited to the Preview Night. We found it to be very helpful, with positive, exciting energy and wonderful volunteers. Good luck to everyone awaiting admission results! |
No by the TJ faculty. It's not done by the same people that read the "why I want to go to TJ" essays. |
Didn't the class of 2025 had multiple kids go to national events from competitive clubs? |
I am saying that froshmores are coming late to the party and there is no mechanism to save spots for the inevitably large class of froshmores we are getting these days. If you are a froshmore from the something like the langley pyramid, you might be in better shape because the upperclassmen might know you. |
| Don't they send an email to applicants and their families a few days in advance, before the results are released? Since tomorrow is a teacher work day, I suspect it's very plausible for the results to be realeased this Friday. I'm very nervous because my DS wasn't able to finish a third of the PSE and there are around a hundred and twenty applicants from DS's middle school. Best of luck |
| Results are Friday the 24th is what’s been rumored. My kid got 2 parts of the PSE wrong, especially a very simple part, so we are kind of nervous! |
| I keep forgetting we’re waiting on this. Thanks for the Friday reminder. |
| Had anybody received an email about results potentially being released this Friday? Or does that just happen out of the blue? |
