It would be great to add ages to this conversation; I have a 16 yo acting like this (what OP described) but we don’t understand what the problem is, but it has created a lot of stress for our family.

I found seeing the behavior through a PDA lens helpful. We did parent coaching here:

Sometimes the issue is that a kid needs to “one up” everyone else, and if we can find ways to give them autonomy in other parts of their lives (which really kids these days rarely have), the difficult or annoying behavior is reduced.
