| If you earned in two states, you file in two states. Simple. |
Parents are not claiming me as dependent in 2025 since my entire tuition for the one semester was waived by the university and I made enough money to take care of my other needs (rent, food, etc.). I am registered to vote in VA but for the 2024 presidential election (the last time I voted), I registered and voted on campus (not in VA). Not sure if that automatically transfers my voter registration to the other state. |
| Vote.org shows me registered to vote at both addresses.. |
I believe domicile rules for voting are different for out of state college students- that is, as a student you can be a resident for voting purposes without changing domicile from your home state. Virginia should have cancelled your registration when you registered in your college state. You can request to be removed from the voter rolls in Virginia. |
| OP here. I did the taxes for all the states involved and it appears that I only have to pay VA about $50, once credit is applied for tax paid in other states. Decided to go ahead and pay that. Small price to pay to avoid issues later. Thanks for all the inputs! |
Glad this worked out- better to get it right and avoid a potential problem, especially when it comes to taxes. |
That is not necessarily true. Some states have reciprocity agreements. Eg WV, VA, DC, and MD only tax salaried workers in their state of residence. A VA resident that works a job in MD only pays Virginia income taxes. |
