Is your kid in one of those very competitive Bay Area high schools by any chance? I’m sure s/he will get great outcomes (if s/he hasn’t already received great offers), especially oos and especially considering English is a niche major.

That's horrible, this is baffling to me, really. How can this be??

And then kids get in that read at a 9th grade level, the system is broken Cali.

It doesn’t do them a service. These unprepared kids will end up dropping out or switching to a super easy major, getting their self-esteem shattered in the meanwhile. Ask me how I know!

I've lived in CA, am familiar with the campus. It's in a pretty suburb, but has a sad, commuter-campus feel to it. More than 2/3 commute to campus. And many who do live on campus go home on weekends. It is totally dead on weekends and a tough, isolating place for OOS students who are there. Not much to do on campus but eat at the cafeteria called anteatery.

Probably my least favorite UC campus that I visited. Much prefer UC Santa Cruz, Berkeley, UCLA.

What do you think of UC Davis?

My kid got in from Washington DC. SATs in the high 1400s. Played a varsity sport for 4 years. Interesting summer internship. Strong student but not top 10%

Davis is a really cute college town. And the capital of CA (Sacramento) is only 20 minutes away by car/uber in case students want to do internships, etc. Davis gets the stereotype locally that it's all about farm/agriculture/veterinary/wine majors, but it has strong core programs too outside of that. Campus is big and lovely but the farm vibes are strong! Mascot is called "Aggie" which is nod to agricutural/vet roots. Get a bike! there are thousands of bikes on campus and is the best way to get around the large campus and explore the college town.

UCs are all test blind so they can't look at SAT scores at all when they make admission decisions.

Thank you for the encouragement! He's at a relatively competitive public in Southern California.

It is a bit confusing, esp the English major part, but we'll wait for the rest of the results to compare. This is great data for us because we have younger ones coming up in a few years.

Not PP but we are also from a competitive private school in SF Bay and DS was denied (not even waitlisted) with high stats for social science. Seemed odd, but to be honest, he wasn't at all excited to UC Irvine and only applied because it was just another check box on the UC application which was 4 essays so he wanted to max his chances after doing all that work.

His 2 BFFs who also have high stats got denied too. They're all scratching their heads, but like you said, it could be Bay area competitive HS thing. I do know that UCs have a mission to try and help students with social mobility and we are not part of a demographic that is prioritized. We're ok with that, as DS already has some wonderful options in hand.

To add, he was genuinely excited about the English department at Irvine. They have great faculty and a pretty prestigious MFA in creative writing (which then trickles down to the undergrads).
