Budget for college student in NYC

My niece gets $500 a month in spending money. She also has a regular weekend housesitting/petsitting gig that brings in a good chunk of change.

We did 300 a month spending money. Food and rent were already covered plus she had her own money from summer jobs and birthday present money from grandparents etc.

If it is just spending money- you shouldn't have a budget. Your child should figure one out based on their summer job earnings.

I went to college in NY, with a 8 meals / week dining plan, and my parents did $1K a month to include my clothing and other discretionary spending. I had a work-study job that paid $12 an hour, 14 hours a week, to supplement it and felt like it was a good amount.

Graduated with enough in savings to pay for my apartment security deposit and have a bit of a safety net going into my first job.
