How much would you budget monthly, outside of housing, for a college student in NYC?

Will they be eating in dining halls?

For what? Housing and food is already covered. I know I don't spend nearly that much on myself as an adult.

Yes
If it is just spending money- you shouldn't have a budget. Your child should figure one out based on their summer job earnings.

$200/week. Students get free or discounted tickets to many things.

My kid uses his own money for spending money. I can’t afford to pay for tuition, room/board, and give him spending money.

I think this is a valid question, regardless of whether the parent is funding social life or the student is. NYC has a different "going out" budget than say Blacksburg. I would also be interested to hear real world commentary regarding this. My guess is 100/wk WITH a dining plan at the school. I gave my older kid in an apt 450/mo to include food (no dining plan) when he was in a lower cost area and also he is not a big goer-outer. I have no idea if he spent it or saved some each month.

I would think that it would be part of the decision making to attend a school in NYC. You know the cost of a social life will be higher. You should already have discussed what you are comfortable providing as far as spending money goes. (based on your budget, beliefs, etc) That amount would go farther in small towns than it will in NYC, but presumably it is either enough to cover things, or your child has determined they can work enough to cover the difference. I would not give my child more "extra" money (this conversation is different if we are talking tuition/dining/books/etc.)

I we t to college in NYC and it is so easy to pick up little one off jobs to bring in money without sacrificing your school/study time. I babysat for a family every Friday night and that was plenty money to cover my social life. My friends with more money literally just spent it on drugs, alcohol, and purses. So maybe you should encourage your kid to get a job to cover social expenses.

BTW it depends a lot if a girl or a guy. In NYC getting into clubs, going to Art openings, parties, going on dates, going out to dinner, getting invited to Hamptons for the weekend is pretty much free.

For example in Blacksberg my daughter said the Frat parties are free ladies and men not in frat who go pay like a $10 cover. So men pay $10 more than women.

In NYC a man might pay for dinner, cover charge, drinks on a date that easily costs $200 to $250.

NYC is higher expectations.
