If I had that, I'd pay the price. We have UDC which is . . . mostly not what we want. So how about nationwide reciprocity for our, what, 20,000 students a year who are ready for college?

At least some kind of agreement with Maryland and Virginia.

Wisconsin and North Dakota students pay instate tuition for U of MN. Not sure why our neighbors couldn't help out.

You get TAG, which is more than others get and there is UDC.

The difference between in state and oos for Minnesota is more than $30k a year. So not more than DCTAG. Students in WI and ND also have instate schools so I'm sure of your point. Minnesota can afford to be more generous than VA and MD?

But Wisconsin also offers in-state (or close to in-state) for some (not sure about flagship) schools. So there’s give & take.

And, DCTAG can totally work for you if you look to states/state Us with cheap OOS tuition, like Wisconsin or MN regionals. But I’m guess no one on DCUM would consider an upper Midwest regional good enough for their kids

This is what DCTAG used to be, years ago. It ain't coming back, OP.

This is the obvious solution, especially because Virginia and Maryland both benefit economically from DC's existence.

It also would better serve the purpose of an "in state university" because part of what makes in state college affordable is proximity to your family, which cuts down on travel costs and enables families to more efficiently support kids through college. While no longer as common, it also enables some kids to live at home while they attend college, a huge benefit.

Unfortunately, MD and VA will never agree to this because they already feel like their state options are oversubscribed, especially the flagships and the more competitive programs. VA residents will never acquiesce to adding 20k DC grads to the instate pools for UVA or W&M. Same with MD an UMD.

Perhaps an arrangement could be made regarding the smaller, less well known state schools in MD and VA. I am pretty sure a couple of them already offer DC grads in-state tuition if they have above a certain grade point average, though I'd have to look that up.

Sure, and I’d like a pony.

Get the automatic scholarships offered by many decent state colleges. And stack your DC money on top of that. That will bring the tuition down to a very reasonable amount.

Your math is off by an order of magnitude - there are fewer than 5,000 DC kids graduating each year.

St. Mary's in MD does offer DC students a discounted rate. Not the full instate price but still pretty good.

We live 15 minutes away from UMD but have to pay full OOS price, which sucks.

What would MD and VA residents get out of this from DC?

DCTAG covers the difference between in-state and OOS at some VA schools, like UMW.

You do get TAG unless your taxable income is over $600K, so that's a discount off of full price. Also, you could have moved across the border to MD at any point, out of state tuition isn't a new development.

OP, you feel your kids should get in-state tuition in all states?? Simply because you chose to live in DC? 😂
Anonymous
Move from DC to Virginia or Maryland like the rest of us did.
Anonymous
We should get reciprocity to make up for the ish your senators pull on us in DC
