Always Wished for DC In-State Tuition Reciprocity

Anonymous
I keep coming back to the idea that I don't want DC TAG, at any amount, really. I just want a universal US-wide reciprocity for in-state tuition for DC students. If I had that, I'd pay the price. We have UDC which is . . . mostly not what we want. So how about nationwide reciprocity for our, what, 20,000 students a year who are ready for college?

Why would the states agree to that without some sort of compensation from DC? You don’t pay taxes in any of those states. And for DC, that would be way for expensive than DC TAG to make up the difference between in state and OOS tuition.

- why should a state do that for DC residents; nothing special about a DC high-school senior vs one from Puerto Rico, St. Thomas, or Iowa. Just go to your local public DC-tax-supported university or pay OOS tuition. Or move! You get what you pay for and you chose to live in DC so deal with the consequences.

At least some kind of agreement with Maryland and Virginia.

Wisconsin and North Dakota students pay instate tuition for U of MN. Not sure why our neighbors couldn't help out.

What DC really needs is to be a state!

But I hear you, OP.

I think it should be available to DC residents. They put up with enough!

I understand what you want, but it probably won’t happen. What’s the problem with the DC Tag? Do you make too much money?

Hell no - if anything give DC back to Maryland. Let the feds keep their existing real estate.

I think TAG is the most practical solution, but it needs to actually increase to stay in line with the actual tuition costs every year. Not just nominally increase every couple decades when you can pry something out of Congressional coffers.

"in state" is lousy for small states.

Many states have informal reciprocity in the form of "merit" "aid" that brings OOS tuition down.

OP—if you care so much, just move to VA or MD like the rest of us that are former DC residents. You don’t pay out of state taxes, so why should you get in state tuition? I am pretty excited that my kid was accepted to UVA. What a bargain.

DCTAG maxes out at (now) 15,000 a year. Not chump change, but not enough to close the gap between in-state and OOS tuition. If you make too much to get DCTAG, you really don't need to worry about paying for school.

You get TAG, which is more than others get and there is UDC.

You can move.

I guess the key word there is "reciprocity."

For this to be appealing, UDC would need to offer something that Michigan, or North Carolina, or Arkansas parents would want enough to support the policy change.
