Early College acceptances

I know 4 off the top of my head from the ones listed above. Kids going to Yale, Cornell, Brown, Penn.

The kids are very smart, they did extremely well but the tip of the scale is the fact that a parent attended the institution.

Just something to keep in mind when crediting a high school for a college outcome. It's not just DMV private school kids who are mostly hooked matriculants to the top universities.

True that there are legacies but even with that, it is not a guarantee and many don’t get in, unlike in the past.

Top college are so much more competitive now.

Would also love to hear about kids post college success!

+1. Would also like to hear about total scholarship awards at the schools.

This was recently shared at a BASIS Town Hall -- so far, more than $11 million in scholarship money (including one Questbridge scholar and I think 4 full-tuition scholarships).

Absolutely. It's not a given and these are kids who did extremely well. But many are hooked applicants the same way legacy applicants from Sidwell are hooked.
Just something to keep in mind before praising DC high school A over DC high school B due to their college matriculation.

It is still early since RD has not come out yet.

DCI hasn’t shared those numbers yet but last year I think total was over 30 million plus. We do know that 2 kids got the GW SJT scholarship - full ride for high-achieving kids in DC. That’s almost 300k and no worries about paying for college. I’ll take that for my kid 😉

I just looked at the website and it says they earned $300 million in scholarships last year. Is that even possible -- like $1 million per student?

I don't know how they calculate it. I know Banneker students get over $100 million in scholarships. I guess just like acceptances, it's not actually what the students use. If you get a full ride to multiple schools, you can only use one. One kid could get a million dollars in scholarships, theoretically.

Yes, all the schools calculate the total awarded and a student can get scholarships from multiple schools. In addition, if the award also covers room and board then that 300-350k can easily bump up to 475k. Nevertheless, lots of kids are getting scholarships if your number is in the 300 millions

Lots of great applicants for scholarships and you need to be able to stand out above the crowd. DCI has some offerings that enable these kids to stand out and have a better chance - scoring 4/5 on AP in 9th/10th, getting IB diploma, being trilingual (high performing kids can take a 2nd language starting in 7th), and study abroad experiences.

In addition, the IB diploma gives you alot more flexibility and opportunities outside the US. AP is US specific but IB is worldwide so kids can apply to almost any school abroad and be offered scholarships.

Above is just my thoughts why DCI kids earn alot of scholarship money.
