How much does your 17 year old sleep?

It certainly isn’t necessarily narcolepsy but sleeping 12 hours a night plus falling asleep in class certainly should be looked at for a sleep disorder. I have narcolepsy and this is pretty much how I experienced high school undiagnosed at the time.


It’s not narcolepsy. This teen is on meds that have these side effects plus has depression and anxiety which compounds the disordered sleeping issues

OP here. I've started him on Vitamin D, Fish oil, Vitamin B Complex and a multivitamin a couple of weeks ago. Hopefully it will improve his energy levels some. Thank you for the responses and brainstorming. I will give the vitamins a little while longer to take effect but if it doesn't improve, I will insist on further bloodwork. I suspect there is some seasonal depression that he is dealing with (I've always had that in the winter months).

Also have him spend some time outside, if you can! It'll get sunny and sun in the natural vitamin D, plus it improves the mood. Movement outside in the spring will do him good! Seasonal depression is the outcome of no sun and a lot of time spent indoors, which causes low energy and sleep issues.

You are contradicting yourself by acknowledging their natural sleep schedules and then telling this parent to get an appointment with a psychologist.

Your kid might need vitamin D or could be completely normal. My older teen used to do this and just recently started getting into better sleep habits. He just turned 18. And suddenly, out of nowhere, my 15 yo is exhausted all of the time and coming home from school and crashing and falling asleep and can barely get up for school. She needs so much sleep. I know it’s also a phase.

I remember feeling exhausted and like I couldn’t function at all, no matter how much sleep I got, well into my early 20s. No, I couldn’t have gone to sleep earlier.

Thank you for this perspective. I guess I'm officially old enough to not remember how much sleep I needed when I was a teen. lol I also just have him so it helps to hear from parents who have more than one kid.

You are quoting me. My kid came home from school today and was planning on going back to the school for the basketball game. She just told me she’s not now because she’s too exhausted and fell asleep. She will be up soon, wide awake, for dinner. I’m not worried because we went through this with my oldest too. I’ll wake her up and not let her sleep too long. I’m no longer stressed about the crazy teen sleep schedules. We’ve been through it before.

My 17yo DS goes to bed between and 9 and 10 and gets up at 5:15-5:30.
