Why so little outrage over the sewage spill?

Anonymous
Local media has collapsed in recent years. There isn't much coverage because there isn't much local news at all anymore. So most people have no idea about what's happened to the Potomac. Or if they do, they have no idea how serious it is. But there for sure won't be crew on the river this Spring. Maybe that will get some attention.

Crew season will have to be cancelled

You won’t hear it here because it’s an unmitigated disaster caused by the dangerously incompetent democrats!

This is about elderly sewer infrastructure and I'd say most of the blame lies with the company not making repairs sooner.

Actually, WaPo hasn't covered it much because it's Trump's fault.

So where will all the club and college crew teams practice?! I would not want my kid exposed to that water. What a nightmare…

OMG THE CREW SEASON!!

Because they would have to admit failure when has that happened?

There's a reporter on NBC Washington on Instagram who has been covering it pretty extensively. I am not sure why it's not in other local media.

You are kidding, right?

Who wants to be next to sewage?

One reason why this isn’t getting more play is that the water intake for the region is upstream of the spill.

OP is exactly right. This is the largest sewage spill in the history of this country. The relative lack of coverage compared to other stories is troubling and I can guess it’s because the perpetrators (incompetent public utility companies) don’t make a convenient villain for the right or left political ecosystems.

Environmentalists should be livid that the gross incompetence and neglect of this utility company led to a spill that will take hundreds of millions to mitigate and that will impact and kill thousands of animals. There should be protests outside of the utility company’s headquarters but DC Water doesn’t get people as animated as Exxon.

If summer camps on the Potomac river (boating in DC, Calleva, etc.) are cancelled parents will go insane and this will be a top story.

DC operates a combined sewer system. Every time we get a heavy rain, the sewage overflows into the Potomac. It's been this way forever, and no one has cared.

It only takes a tiny splash to make someone very, very ill.

Awful. How long will it take to clean up?

No it hasn’t. This is fake news, local government bot spin. This is the largest sewage spill in US history. Period.
