Why do so many dog owners not pick up dog poop in snow? cold?

I know which neighbor lets their dog out to poop on everyone's lawns in the snow. So I shoveled up the frozen poops and left all the hockey pucks of poop on their porch on the day when it warmed up.

This is amazing

I always pick up after our dog. My kids have been taught they must always pick up after our dog. The one time one of my kids threw out a bag of dog poop in a neighbor’s trash can, I made the kid go retrieve it because that’s not acceptable. I even pick up other people’s dogs’ poop. I can’t stand the lazy, selfish a-holes who don’t properly dispose of dog waste.

No new neighbors, no new dogs. Do someone is suddenly doing this? Seems hostile.

My kids sometimes walk the dog and I’ve told them that if they are the AH doing this, I will basically disown them. We live in a really nice neighborhood—people have expensive dogs and take care of their stuff. It’s maddening.

I do think some of the smaller ones are fox poop though. We have tons of foxes.

Foxes are so rude with where they poop too, I swear it’s like they’re trying to make people step in it. You can usually tell it’s a fox from the seeds though and I think birds and squirrels go after it for that reason.

Most newer dog owners don't train their dogs to do business on command, and don't make sure their dogs only go on their property. They walk their dog(s) to your property and leave the mess there.

Honestly, most people who got dogs in the last 10 years shouldn't have. They feel entitled to have a dog without feeling responsible for the dog or the impact of the dog. I love dogs, but I'm really starting to hate most dog owners.

Whereas in usual circumstances, the poo isn't as noticeable on the ground/grass/bushes/leave, and it degrades more rapidly.

Hmm. I've changed my mind. Perhaps in very cold temps, people have difficulty handling poo bags with gloves, like I do, and don't want to take their gloves off in the bitter cold. If I can't tie a knot in the bag with my gloves, I take them off to do so - and in the low windchills we had, that was quite an experience. But I pick up no matter what.

So maybe a little of both?

You're a kind person to assume any kind of good faith from these creeps. I'm disabled, and cold sensitivity is part of it. I still managed to properly bag and dispose of my pet's waste. Discomfort isn't an excuse.

I'm a dog owner and dog lover and I hate this phenomenon, too. We always pick up our dog's poop and carry extra bags in all our pockets in case we run out.

My only generous theory would be that: we have some mobility-challenged and elderly neighbors who use assistive devices (e.g. motor scooters and walkers) and I imagine it could be harder for them to bend down and pick up poop with harsher weather conditions and heavy snow. I hope this could explain some of it. But unfortunately we are all still stuck with the results.

I’m a dog owner and I am so disgusted by this. I take my dog in Rock Creek Park every day and the amount of dog poop I have seen there over the last 3 weeks is astounding. People are leaving it on huge fields of ice, where it is very very apparent. I just don’t get this mindset.

On an other note, the amount of trash I am seeing on the streets right now is also bad, so it’s. It just dog owners.

Same in my neighborhood. So much dog poop around since the big snow/freeze

The difference is whether or not they have seeds in them.

+1000

It's easy to differentiate between dog poop and other animals.

Wild animals are actually a lot more conscientious about their waste than many, many dog owners.

Dog owner here and I totally agree. So much poop everywhere. I always pick up.

I even saw a huuuuge pile of poop on my kids' school field. Huuge one. Disgusting.

I didn’t do this, but I was tempted to toss my dog’s poop in the yards of neighbors who shoveled their driveways and walkways, but not their sidewalks…
