Some entertainers make billions. That doesn’t make a theater degree a wise investment.

Did you get rejected from a top CS program or something? CS students at kid's school getting internships and jobs galore.

Sure, if your kid has an idea and wants to get a CS degree to become a tech entreprenuer, fine. But for the masses, that's not the case.

Listen to heads of MBB, GS, Citadel talk about their hiring needs and it'll give you a good idea of how the landscape is shifting. We're in that moment of time where factory workers were slowly replaced and jobs dried up. As parents, sitting under a rock isn't really a good idea at this time. For the people in tech, to say it's "not a big deal" tells me that you're also very unaware, when every single tech C-suite person out there is saying how they're replacing the coding jobs (the primary entry for CS majors into a tech company) with AI. For the amount of scrutiny that this particular forum places on getting into the elite schools and programs around the country, it's a little baffling to see such utter ignorance on the subject.

This applies to most industries, not just CS. Entry level anywhere will be tough going.

Go through this forum and you'll see the vast majority of parents saying their kids are CS majors with stellar stats. The C student in a CS major have already pivoted, most likely. I'm trying to understand why the A students in high school are still applying to CS and why the A students in college in CS haven't pivoted already.

Spotify announced on their last earnings call that no employee has written any code since December. Ai has done all of it. They have a lot of people on their payroll who were paid do to this (hint hint, cost cuts when we lose all these people)

My CS/math major kid has been very fortunate to land multiple internships on their own (received five offers this year, will take two back to back, and had one last year). DC is at a flagship.

If you hustle, apply to a ton of internships early, and focus on leetcode, you'll snag something.

I work with big tech, and they are pushing everyone to use AI as much as possible, so know how to embed AI in your work. When DC was interviewing, many asked about AI use.

It's not all doom and gloom yet. AI is being used to make your work more efficient. Someone also has to QA the AI output because you may get AI slop.

Yes, but you're talking about hiring numbers around the margins. There's no dispute that no one will be hiring coders in the same volume in the future. And with so many kids studying programming, shouldn't we all really be thinking about this issue.

How many is "so many" though. I mean, every industry except for healthcare is seeing job openings decline.
