Great example of why we chose private school

+1. My kid walked 10 min to and from our local public elementary school today and then played outside with classmates/neighbors. And we didn’t have to pay 60k a year for the privilege.

So you care more about a short commute and your kid’s social life than their education.

The OP is talking about outdoor recess. Which is exercise and social life. Just like walking ot school with friends.

I like my kid’s local elementary school. Their teacher has a master’s degree and 20 years of teaching experience, and I have no complaints about what they are learning. And yes I think it’s good for my kid to have a short commute and neighborhood friends.

Enjoy your $60k/year recess!

Honestly my kids got tons of exercise sledding all week long, playing hockey on the lawn, and playing hide and seek in the woods. And now that theyre back at school, their 3/4 mile walk to school, and then back again, gives them plenty of fresh air and socialization too. Oh and also after their fun snow week, they have been having outdoor recess because parent volunteers shoveled the hard courts for basketball and soccer. I actually felt bad for the private school kids going in to school at 830am when their neighbors were making snow men. To each their own, I guess!

And yet here you are monitoring the Private & Independent Schools thread. Must be either because you're really curious for your kids or because you're a troll. Which is it?

Let me educate you on how DCUM works. Many (most?) readers check out “recent posts” which contains threads from all forums with the most recent activity.

Are you under the impression that private school kids don’t know math?

Anonymous wrote:Yeah OP’s post is pretty funny. But seriously as a private school parent I was happy that my kids to got back to school after only 2 snowdays. Our neighborhood public was closed for one a week and even cancelled all weekend activities! Then they did virtual school and we all know how effective that is.

My kids were able to go back to school after 2 fun days playing in the snow, quickly got back to in person instruction, and continued all their extra curricular activities as scheduled. And I’m glad we don’t have to deal with added school days going into half of June. I felt bad for their friends (and their parents) who stayed in our public school.

Seriously??! Are you happy that your school is done in early June?

Private school kids have longer days than MCPS and don’t have state testing, so they have more instructional hours, despite ending earlier.

And our school doesn’t close for all the Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Hindu and Chinese holidays. On those days our public school is closed for students, but mine go to school for most of them.

This was my reaction, too. This can't be a serious post.

OP, did it ever occur to you that this is a greater liability concern for the public before you posted?

My kid is at Beauvoir and still no outdoor recess… I hate that since I have a boy who loves to play soccer. But our walk to school is about 5-10 min so I guess he gets some exercise. Fingers crossed the kids can go outside next week!
