| Chase has been great. |
|
I recommend that you be on the account as well, as a custodial, assuming it's not too late.
My DC opened his checking account around age 16. I am a custodian on it. DC is now 21 and I'm still "on" the account and can monitor it. I rarely do at this point. My main account is with Bank of America and DC's is with BOA as well. Not that they are "the best" by any means -- that's just where the accounts are. |
| All the major banks offer student accounts. DS just turned 18 and opened one at PNC because it’s convenient at home and to his future college campus. My older kids both opened with Capital One. They all did it on their own but did need my help pulling out the birth certificate and social security card. |
|
My kids (21 & 22) have Capital One accounts. They don't use much cash but do have debit cards which can be used to get cash from the atm if needed.
Both started with Capital One teen accounts when they first got jobs in HS. |
| many younger people don't even have checking accounts. rarely need a check. |
Some payment services operate through checking accounts |
Why are you monitoring their account? Did your parents monitor yours? |
| My kid has capital one as well. In addition to atms, she uses cash back at stores on those rare occasions she needs cash. She’s still in HS so need for checks yet. |
I said I still "can" monitor, but "rarely do". Did you read that part? I check it like once every 2 months to make sure a bill got paid, esp. when it is coming after break. And, yes, I'm sure my parents actually did when they opened my paper bank statements that were delivered to the house in the 80s and 90s when I was in college. Just because the Internet didn't exist yet, there were ways to do things in the past. |
| My kid’s first accounts were through my bank (a credit union). Since she was under 18, I was a co-account holder (though it was in her name). Once she went to college and grad school this came in handing for transferring money, 529 disbursements, etc. |
....how are they getting their paychecks depositing and paying their bills then? |
| We opened Chase accounts for our kids. They are now 17 and 19. Son uses his for his PT job direct deposit and he has a credit/debit card tied to it. No complaints. |
| Start with what your bank offer and see if they have a student account. |
|
Capitol One ofcourse. They can take cash out from grocery stores when buying something.
Young adult should be opening a secured credit card or student credit card soon (CO again). |
