It is more like incompetent AF. I am almost 100% sure they will walk this back in some way.

They’re saying it was Mexican cartel drone activity and they couldn’t ensure commercial airline safety. The restriction has now been lifted.

This is insanity. They wanted to close a major airport for 10 days because they're testing counter-drone technology. With no notice?

Live Updates: F.A.A. Lifts Closure at El Paso Airport
The brief shutdown was related to a test of counter-drone technology at a nearby military base. The F.A.A. had said that no flights would be allowed to or from the airport until Feb. 20 because of unspecified “special security reasons.”

Causing confusion is the point.

You are also fast! I just saw that the band was lifted. This was such an odd closure. I joked that they found alien technology in that area maybe a spaceship 😂.

Yet another example of power tripping idiots in the Trump administration.

I'm glad I found this thread. I just opened a new thread and off topic not realizing that there was a threat here in the travel discussion

There was no way the initial duration was anything but a mistake.

What idiots.

Not sure why OP couldn't be bothered to quote a snippet of the article. Lazy OP

"A notice posted on the FAA’s website said the temporary flight restrictions were for “special security reasons,” but did not provide additional details. The closure does not include Mexican airspace."

Do you think it's normal to close an American airport for 10 days with no notice? Something bad is happening there.

Pilot here. Not normal at all. I've been flying for 25 years and the only similar event I know of is 9/11. That was a complete shutdown of all airspace across the entire country for 2 days. DCA was closed for several weeks IIRC, I think it was the only commercial airport closed for an extended period (some smaller GA airports stayed closed or heavily restricted for months).

We do regularly get short-notice Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFRs) for presidential travel or major events with large crowds of people, but they are much shorter and typically still allow airline traffic and medevac type flights.

So it was actually for "a small part of one day," and not ten days? I'm sure there's nothing to see here.
