El Paso airspace closed 10 days

If someone’s stuck there for work, isn’t the closest airport like 10 hours driving?

Tucson and Albuquerque are within a 4-5 hour drive.

NYT says “the nearest U.S. city is Las Cruces, N.M., about 35 miles away, whose airport is served only by Advanced Air. El Paso is about a four-and-a-half hour drive from Midland-Odessa, Texas, seven hours from San Antonio, nine hours from Dallas and 10 hours from Houston.

Not sure why OP couldn't be bothered to quote a snippet of the article. Lazy OP

"A notice posted on the FAA’s website said the temporary flight restrictions were for “special security reasons,” but did not provide additional details. The closure does not include Mexican airspace."

That doesn't really say anything. Personally I think it's some sort of deportations thing- they have a big ICE facility/jail near El Paso.

10 days closed with no warning is sketchy AF.

Do you think it's normal to close an American airport for 10 days with no notice? Something bad is happening there.

It is more like incompetent AF. I am almost 100% sure they will walk this back in some way.

Are we bombing Juarez?
My only guess is that this has to do with the big ice facility in El Paso. I wonder if they are making it harder for lawyers to reach inmates there.

Its either ICE related or they are going to bomb Mexico. Fort Bliss is right there.

https://www.nytimes.com/live/2026/02/11/us/faa-el-paso-flights-airport

Shortly before 3 a.m. at the airport, yellow gates blocked the elevators and escalators, prohibiting anyone from riding up to the second level, which is where people walk through Transportation Security Administration checkpoint lines to board flights.

Some travelers said they saw messages on social media indicating the airport had closed, but airlines told them their flights were still scheduled.

Here’s what else to know:

Airport: The airport in El Paso, the 23rd-most populous city in the nation according to the 2020 census, serves a vast swath of West Texas and eastern New Mexico and offers direct flights to hubs across the southwestern United States, as well as to cities like Atlanta, Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles and Seattle. The nearest major U.S. airport is in Albuquerque, about 270 miles away.

Impact: There are just over 1,000 flights scheduled into and out of El Paso International Airport over the period covered by the closure, according to Cirium, an aviation data firm. Southwest Airlines is the biggest carrier at the airport, with nearly 480 flights scheduled over that period. While the closure could be devastating locally, the airport is not a major hub for connecting flights, so its effect on flights nationally will be limited.

Stranded travelers: Alex Torres, 42, was among the travelers who arrived at the airport unaware that flights had been grounded. Ms. Torres, who was expecting to fly to New York for business, said she spoke with an American Airlines representative on the phone who had yet to hear the news. “They didn’t know anything about the airport being closed,” she said.

The main point is in the title. No need for it to be a political discussion. However, it is unprecedented!

No med flights either, and El Paso has the only level 1 trauma center within 300 miles.

It's a closure due to government action. Not sure how you take the "politics" out of that.
