During his joint address to Congress on February 28, 2017, President Donald Trump highlighted the Gordie Howe International Bridge as a prime example of infrastructure cooperation.

While discussing the need to rebuild American infrastructure and work with allies, he stated:

"In fact, our friends in Canada built—and help us with—a brand-new bridge that's going to be a beauty. They're building a massive new bridge between Detroit and Windsor, a project that will create thousands of American jobs."

The bridge has been under construction for quite a while. I think he's worried about his own longevity and is just trying to leave as much chaos behind as possible. If he can't live forever he wants to make sure everyone else who stays suffers in his name. It is bonkers to me that we are living through this.

Which means that previously, he wanted extraordinary levels of adulation, but managed to keep it rational. Not anymore. Anytime his demented brain misfires, particularly in the wee hours of the morning, he chews the cud of all his old grievances and starts demanding new shows of abasement, entirely forgetting the multiple previous ones that have been performed.

The Gordie Howe International Bridge, expected to open early this year, was built by Canada to ease cargo transport between Detroit and Windsor, Ontario.

President Trump threatened on Monday to block the opening of a new bridge between the United States and Canada if Canadian officials did not address a long and growing list of grievances, escalating diplomatic tensions between the two countries.

Amid a trade war and a deepening rift between the United States and its northern neighbor, Mr. Trump said that he would “not allow” the opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge, scheduled to open early this year for traffic between Detroit and Windsor, Ontario, “until the United States is fully compensated for everything we have given them, and also, importantly, Canada treats the United States with the Fairness and Respect that we deserve.”

It was not immediately clear how Mr. Trump would block the opening of the bridge. Its construction was paid for by Canada, and a public-private arrangement , under which Canada and Michigan would jointly operate the crossing, gives Michigan part ownership.

Drew Dilkens, the mayor of Windsor, said on Monday evening that he was stunned but not surprised by the president’s threat. “This is crazy stuff,” said Mr. Dilkens.
