Where have all the deer gone?

They are hiding until dark, because of hunters. I feed them in this weather, and there are loads coming out at night.

And all.the deer poop is frozen on top of the snow. Please let me know where your house is so I can send them there!

I have lived on my property roughly in the midst of 1000s of acres of conservation land for 30+ years

Even through the worst winters the deer and turkeys still show up every spring with their fawns and poults.

As fragile as birds are, they did actually appear to have survived at least one major global extermination event, like lots of fish and reptiles who are also basically survivors of the Jurassic age.

I just wonder that you’d actually want harmless mammals to “starve to death or freeze” over some rambling bamboo or something.

The normal range for the white-tailed deer extends well into Canada. This weather is not particularly worse than what Canada experiences in a typical winter.

I saw at least 2 dead on the side if the road this week somewhere between Fairfax County and Clarke County.

White tailed deer do fine in this weather—they survive Canadian winters which are much longer and harsher. They can exist off tree bark and pine needles in winter and have super thick undercoats in winter and have a higher body temp than we do. They can also get all their water through eating frost/snow and the aforementioned pine needles and bark.

They are less active in winter and “bed down” more, so you’ll see less.

Also, white tailed deer do not migrate at this time of year. They stay put in the area and spend most of their time in a low activity state.

I am sure the winter weather will kill a small number of the weaker animals. However, I suspect the snow and ice also make it harder for the deer to run away from traffic.

I just googled the coldest temperatures white tailed deer can survive in and so many articles came up about they survive in winter and are meant for this. These temperatures are nothing for them.

Go move somewhere else then. In our current society they are doing a ton of harm. They also don't have the natural predators thanks to our invasiveness and have been allowed to grow out of control. You have to pick one or the other right now and I'm picking humans over deer.

The deer came over the Bering Land Bridge just like humans did.
