CYA AAU tryouts

Well CYA is in Fairfax, and FCPS middle schools don't have basketball teams or coaches.
None of our FCPS HS coaches run AAU programs or coach an AAU team.

The bigger grift we’ve seen is less around friendships and more around other sports. Larlo’s dad is the coach and Larlo’s friend Tommy isn’t great at basketball, but Tommy’s dad is a baseball coach and Larlo is a bubble baseball player who wants to get drafted onto a good team.

Or two players are about the same and the kid who plays the baseball/lacrosse/etc gets the nod because there is a bias that those kids are definitely athletic vs the unknown quantity. This isn’t really grift, just bias.

If your kid is fabulous, it won’t matter. If your kid is a bubble player, it may not bounce his way - but that’s not a reason to not try out.

They can, they just can’t coach kids from their team, but their assistants can.

DP and oh yes I suspect this is what happened with FCYBL teams in one of my kids' grades. There seemed to be a network of dads whose kids all played a different CYA sport, including the coach and his kid. Spots seemed to mainly go to kids from that other sport, including one kid whose dad coaches the travel team for that other sport. A few solid players on the bubble were left out, and notably those kids aren't part of that other sport network. It was particularly egregious for one kid who didn't make it.

What is it with basketball, lacrosse, and baseball that seem to attract the CYA bro dad network? I bet it's like that elsewhere too.

What is the difference between CYA Rec and AAU if both have parents coaching?

CYA AAU teams play in AAU tournaments. CYA rec teams play other CYA rec team in rec league.

They do this year‑round so they can market themselves as an elite organization in Northern Virginia - until they face genuinely talented teams in other circuits and end up getting destroyed.

Are you kidding? VA will take anyone who is willing to pay those outrageous prices. A couple years ago they may have been looking for elite players to play alongside Jordan Scott, but he’s gone now and the con game will be back in full force.

Nah. They recruit talent from other teams (CYO, Takeover B/C, FCYBL... you name it!). Perhaps those parents are blinded by the 'glory' of Jordon Scott playing there and will shell out $$$.

They recruit talent from whoever is willing to pay those outrageous fees. Most people don’t end up happy there and leave.

The 16u and 17u may bring in some Dematha kids to help their teams compete at tournaments. Those kids may be from takeover or something, but in that situation they are just bringing ringers in.

Va Elite is mostly fluff.

CTS is in the Fairfax/Chantilly area. They will offer a better experience than CYA

They have two coaches. One is nuts. Those aren't good odds.

How is one nuts?

NP- you don't need the details from pp. There is only one meaningful way basketball coaches are "nuts", way too intense, screaming at kids, screaming at refs, getting thrown out of games, running terrible practices, not showing up, etc.

FWIW, every coach I have seen mentioned on here as "nuts" who I later saw coach in real life? I agreed with the label.

They could mean a lot of things when they used the term. I’m a new commenter and I want to know what is meant,

I was actually considering taking my kid to a tryout and would like to make a more informed decision.

They have two coaches: BP and QS. Don't take an offer to play for a team coached by QS. He coached CYA travel and was awful.
