The bigger grift we’ve seen is less around friendships and more around other sports. Larlo’s dad is the coach and Larlo’s friend Tommy isn’t great at basketball, but Tommy’s dad is a baseball coach and Larlo is a bubble baseball player who wants to get drafted onto a good team. Or two players are about the same and the kid who plays the baseball/lacrosse/etc gets the nod because there is a bias that those kids are definitely athletic vs the unknown quantity. This isn’t really grift, just bias. If your kid is fabulous, it won’t matter. If your kid is a bubble player, it may not bounce his way - but that’s not a reason to not try out.
DP and oh yes I suspect this is what happened with FCYBL teams in one of my kids' grades. There seemed to be a network of dads whose kids all played a different CYA sport, including the coach and his kid. Spots seemed to mainly go to kids from that other sport, including one kid whose dad coaches the travel team for that other sport. A few solid players on the bubble were left out, and notably those kids aren't part of that other sport network. It was particularly egregious for one kid who didn't make it. What is it with basketball, lacrosse, and baseball that seem to attract the CYA bro dad network? I bet it's like that elsewhere too.
