I never understand this logic. Just because the state heavily subsidizes to make tuition low for their residents doesn’t mean the quality of education in a state school is not worth the price compared to a private school! |

These are very different schools. If cost isn't an issue, Michigan is much better for STEM majors like engineering. The business programs are a wash. Both Ross and McDonough are great. For IR, obviously Georgetown.
For everything else, it's more a matter of personal preferences. Michigan is the big rah rah university in a good college town. Georgetown is kind of the opposite of that. But choosing between Michigan and Georgetown is a good problem to have regardless. |
| I went to Michigan, loved it, and don't want my kids to go. It's just too expensive OOS for what you get. |
It’s the same people who pay $60k for Holton because they’re horrified by the idea of a public school like Whitman. They can’t imagine that anyone else doesn’t share their fears and prejudices. |
| I turned both down but they were my #2 and #3. Preferred Michigan over Georgetown |

do overnights at both
FWIW, my kid spent a weekend at Georgetown and couldn't believe how expensive it was. Pre-party on campus, uber to a club, entry fee (kids say that's sometimes $50!), $15 drinks, Uber back etc. His friends says he never spends under 100 going out - and often can't afford it when others can. Parties on campus/right off-campus also have a cover. Im sure there are other ways to socialize, but talking to a few kids there, this isn't uncommon. COA is more than what's on the website. That said, kids love it. And Mich too |
Have fun studying in a factory! If you do not know the difference, you are only outing yourself as someone who is unfamiliar with one or the other. But people actually familiar with both know there is a huge difference. |
| Visited UMich in the late 90s and there was a KKK march on campus. These folks were in full costume. Hopefully things have changed since then. |
You need analogy help. Would you pay 60k for Whitman? |
Many people do. They just pay it in real estate costs and local taxes, rather than paying it directly to the school. |
| Choosing between an expensive party and an education....one will teach you what to think, the other will teach you how to think. |
Not sure whether by “expensive party” you meant the football game in Ann Arbor or the $200-a-night Georgetown club scene PP described. |
NP. I haven't checked these specific schools, but overnight visits are not offered by most schools anymore. |
I had firsthand experience with one of HYP, Cal (granted, not UMich), and another top 20 elite (ranked higher than GT), as an undergrad, grad and faculty, not in that order. If your kid is really good, then she would get so much out of a place like Cal (the faculty and Ph.D. students there are tippy top in the world), including personal mentoring from faculty. If your kid needs more hand-holding, then a top 20 (not HYPSM) elite private would work better! Here I’ve left HYPSM out, but am comparing one similar to UMich to another similar to GT, even though the schools I had personal experience with were ranked higher than the two in question. |
I guess (although they def are at some), but it doesn't matter - every senior knows people at both. Do admitted students events and then spend a weekend on campus with a friend |
