When to go out for snow sledding?

Anonymous
We went out early from 7:30-9ish and are now home making waffles. We wanted to catch the fluffy snow before the sleet arrived. We also got the first round of shoveling done.

You can still sled (just did it today, also grew up in the midwest) just know it's faster and a bit harder when you fall off.

How dangerous is that? With layer of ice?

Sure it is. If that were the case, kids in the Midwest would never leave their homes. I grew up in Michigan and we’d play outside in this weather all the time. In DC it’s 17 right now, feels like 3. My kids are outside right now.

It's ice coming down and not snow.

That means no sledding. I did not want to wake up the whole neighborhood at 7am sledding at a slope with toms of townhouses around it. Now we miss the chance.

Depends on how steep the hill is. Getting going a little faster isn't that big of a deal. But if you don't stop yourself and hit something then it is. So make sure your kid knows how to stop the sled.

Worst injury I ever got sledding in Michigan was a bloody nose when I was 5.

When my kids were little, we'd try to go out once around 9-10 am, then again mid afternoon. An hour at a time was plenty for them.

By noon or 1pm, teenagers are filling up the sledding hills so it's a lot more crowded. My kids are teens now and love going then, but not much when they were young.

Tomorrow likely will be too icy. Much more dangerous.

out again 3-4 …

Inside for movies and dinner

You wait to shovel you don’t wait to sled

You take kids shovel twice a day. How do you do that? With all wet snow clothing and kids are sweating in between .

What is the chance they can go sledding again tomorrow Monday?

The snow will be here all week, sweetie, have you looked at the temperature forecast? It won't just go away when the precipitation falls, LOL!

My kids have been outside shoveling for different houses in the neighborhood for 2 hours. If you’re bundled and active, you stay comfortable.

It's fine right now because the ice is powdery but with the freezing rain that's supposed to hit what's likelynto happen tonight is a thicker crust of ice is going to form on top. Much, much less pleasant to play on.

Another Michigander here! I say it’s fine depending on the amount of ice. Just be careful. Tie broken I guess. lol
