IB Math Apps or IB Math Analysis

Anonymous
Dos anyone have links could share from teachers that put their AA or AI unit lessons online (YouTube)? Don’t have to be current- even just 1 class or even from when COVID years if anything recorded. If able to provide a link, would be really helpful to see how material is presented and classes taught in FCPS schools to better understand these math classes. Thank you if can

What colleges require calc unless applying for Engineering?

No, they are completely separate approaches. Analysis is pure math, theoretical, math, etc. Applications is contextual work problems. You could probably do analysis year one and get through applications year two, since about 70% of the content overlaps, but the way the material is studied is fundamentally different. (at least at my school.)

You can do Apps in 10th and switch to analysis in 11th

Year 1 to year 1, yes. Year 1 apps to year 2 analysis, no (at least, nowhere I’ve taught)

Another math teacher here and same at my school.

Did they actually explicitly tell you this? How do you know?

One of my students took IB apps HL and got into stanford this year. Another is in IB apps SL and got into northwestern. You can absolutely get into top schools with IB apps--but you need both years, not just one.

OP here: DS is not a top grader so schools like Stanford or MIT are non-starters. More like UPitt or Rutgers kinda guy.

The level of school is less of a determinant of the class you should take than the intended major. If he wants to do engineering, he needs to take analysis. Applications is not going to have the foundational math theory an engineering degree will require.

Does anyone know if Marshall offers Precalc/Calc or one has to go the IB route?

If you want AP, you have to go the online route.

What about all these Juniors who are in Algebra 2? What are they supposed to take?

If you want the full IB math curriculum, you need to finish algebra 2 sophomore year. If you aren’t taking algebra 1 until 9th grade, you need to take geometry over the summer, or accept that you aren’t going to get through the top math (which is fine! There’s still a college for you!)

From NOVA at a MC / UMC HS, or from ROVA?

From NOVA at a MC/UMC high school. UVA cares about your GPA and it was high

Yeah, this is for IB diploma students. Not everyone is pursuing it.

If you want to be a stem major 100% analysis HL for year 2!!

My senior is taking both IB analysis 2HL and AP calc BC since he didn’t take Geometry until 9th grade.
