Colleges with good rock music scenes

Wesleyan. A ton of super-talented musicians there who aren’t music majors but form bands and perform.

VCU -- Richmond has a great underground music scene, and VCU undergrads are very active in it. Lots of house shows around RVA

UMass -- Pioneer Valley has a fun music scene! Kim Gordon lived nearby for a while and a whole ehost of other indie folks.

He does not want to pursue music as a degree or professionally, but he wants to keep playing and gigging in college if possible. Can anyone share schools with particularly good/lively student music scenes? Social media makes it look like UVA has one and maybe W&M. He is not preppy and does not want a big frat scene. Thanks!

UMD College Park

If there's not already a scene, start one

Nashville has an excellent music scene - so Vanderbilt and Belmont. Both schools have strong music departments. It's not all country

New York obviously - so NYU

Boston too - so BU, Emerson, Berklee of course

The good college towns like Ann Arbor and Athens - so Michigan and Georgia.

Pittsburgh schools. Indie bands play at clubs.

I have recent graduates. Can confirm both W&M and VCU in Virginia for active band scenes.

Oberlin seems like the obvious choice.

The conservatory is part of the college of arts and sciences (CAS). There is music everywhere. I guess he’d be at a disadvantage since he wouldn’t be as talented as some of the conservatory kids, but most kids there are into music and you don’t need to be part of the conservatory to participate in the music scene. Tons of bands and music events.

The answer here is any college in Music City. PP mentioned Vandy and, especially, Belmont but there are a dozen others inc. Lipscomb, Fisk and MTSU. My kid attends school in Nashville now and plays or watches live music 5 nights a week. He gigs with multiple configurations of bands because everyone does music, all of the time. It’s possibly too much actually

Look for schools in LA, Boston or NYC. LA has a great scene with lot of talented people getting together for bands. Boston has 250,000 college students and Berklee College of Music. NYC tons of other musicians.
