I assume MVC is first semester and DE is second semester? DD took them at the same time and it was not ideal since DE builds in MVC concepts. |
Yes MVC is the first semester and DE is second semester |
What is H. MWH? (Middle school parent trying to learn )
|
Honors Modern World History--11th grade history class. |
I would suggest taking out AP research and using that slot for language You want at least 3 years of the same language to be considered for highly selective schools. Then if in 12th he fills the language slot with a very high level stem course it will be okay. I assume he is likely applying to college as a stem major? |
Yes he’ll be a STEM major. He’s completed 3 yrs of language. He was thinking of taki mg the 4th yr as a senior. I don’t know that he wants to take the AP levels for language. |
|
Did he already take AP seminar? (at our school it is a prereq for A research).
What is DP? I concur with others about foreign language. Search this thread and you'll find long threads on foreign language. The upshot is that the hive believes that top schools will severely penalize students for dropping foreign language unless they have gone through AP foreign lang. We don't need to rehash it here, but do look at prior threads. |
I meant three years of language while at the high school. Not including MS. |
| I would not suggest taking a break in the language ie taking it in 10th, then none in 11th and then taking it again in 12th. That is odd on a transcript |
Yes he’s taking AP Sem this year. He’s enjoying the class and I think it’s one of the most valuable classes he’s taken. I know not all colleges consider it for credit or placement, but it’s such a good foundational class. If he needs 4 yrs of foreign language and they all have to be taken in HS, not MS, then he’s need to drop Research. I know my opinion doesn’t matter for college admissions, but Research is a much more valuable course for him over his language. |
This isn’t true. You are only penalized if you could have taken it, but opt not too. For instance if you start a new language in 9th and Honors level 4 is the highest option you have as a senior at your school then the would not expect you to have taken an AP level since you can’t sign up for it with your skill level. It is about taking 4 years of the same language in HS. |
|
Thanks for everyone's advice. I've reworked his schedule to accommodate the foreign language. Is taking AP Bio and Chem as a senior too much? Both are double periods (DP)
1. AP Research 2. AP Lang 3. H. MWH 4. AP Mechanics 5. AP E&M 6. MV/DE 7. French 4 12th Grade 1. H. English 12 --not going to take AP Lit. 2. Linear Algebra 3. French 5 4. AP Chem (DP) 5. AP Bio (DP) |
| That’s impressive your school has all that. |
You're right. I worded it badly. I also don't want to derail this thread since there are a lot of prior threads on language. But I should have said that people believe that universities want 4 years of foreign language in HS and the exception to that is getting a 4 or 5 on the AP exam (at which people imagine that universities will give you a pass on language study after that). You'll notice that this is about people's beliefs and imaginings. Truth is, we're all guessing. |
| I'd take one AP physics class each year, swapping it with either AP chem or AP bio in 12th. Don't double up on physics. |
