So is the goal now to control the entire hemisphere?

Sounds like someone is just learning about the Monroe Doctrine.

You mean that relic of the early 19th century when whites owned slaves and we didn't even have paper currency? Why are you bringing it up?

Perhaps the poster brought it up because Trump himself did? It's Trump's own justification.

No, I just remember AP US History class from 1995.

As if there is anything worth having in South and Central America. Most of these countries are embarrassments of laziness and corruption.

It's the Donroe Document, according to Trump.

Wow. People are really dumb. I really would be curious to know how many people who are posting could find Venezuela on a map.

It isn’t the Monroe Doctrine that is relevant in this case, it is the Roosevelt Corollary.

In 1904 and 1905, President Theodore Roosevelt expanded the Monroe Doctrine ti Congress. The corollary stated that not only were the nations of the Western Hemisphere not open to colonization by European powers, but that the United States had the responsibility to preserve order and protect life and property in those countries.

It stars in part, “Any country whose people conduct themselves well can count upon our hearty friendship. If a nation shows that it knows how to act with reasonable efficiency and decency in social and political matters, if it keeps order and pays its obligations, it need fear no interference from the United States. Chronic wrongdoing, or an impotence which results in a general loosening of the ties of civilized society, may in America, as elsewhere, ultimately require intervention by some civilized nation, and in the Western Hemisphere the adherence of the United States to the Monroe Doctrine may force the United States, however reluctantly, in flagrant cases of such wrongdoing or impotence, to the exercise of an international police power.”

The US supposedly was going to abandon this viewpoint with the Clark Amendment in the 1930’s but that hasn’t been the case.

Was the the Trump administration model?

When Trump took office, the US was a global superpower. Thanks to trump and Putin, it is reverting to a power for the Western Hemisphere.

This is a downgrade, while China and Russia carve up Europe and Asia.

It was Trump that brought up the Monroe Doctrine yesterday. And, he is really dumb.

This post is so historically ignorant it should have been posted on DC Urban Nephews instead. We’ve been doing this for 200+ years.

I cannot fathom the depth of this stupidity and ignorance.

Sounds like you're the ignorant one. The Monroe Doctrine is a relic of 19th century imperialism. It basically divides realms of influence between the US and Europe according to geography. The arc of the 20th century was to remove colonial power, liberate nations, and treat disagreements through bilateral treaties, multilateral agreements, the UN, and the ICC. I know MAGA wants to move back to 1895, but the civilized world has moved on and the Monroe Doctrine is entirely irrelevant to the 21st century.

Well apparently not

Lots of history to unpack for you here. Whites were the first to ban slavery. (As an aside they were the first and only a few actually ever owned slaves in America, the rich whites.). The Monroe doctrine likely helped eliminate slavery throughout the west like Cuba and Brazil.

Though many places in Africa and the Middle East are still struggling to overcome the effects.

Looks like the Trump admin brokered a deal to split the world up, allowing Russia and China a lot more power.

I don’t know PP. The current administration is giving corrupt third world countries a run for their money when it comes to overt corruption.

Is this the whole spheres of influence thing?

This is actually an incredible point. Trump & Republicans are willfully giving up our superpower status to merely be a regional power. Insane.
