| I know two Xaviers. One black, one white |
| I’m AA and I think your husband is being ridiculous. |
|
Google says is of Basque origin. So not sure it’s African American.
I know an Asian kid named Xavier. And I knew a white Xavier when I was a kid. |
| I love it! Cute |

My baby’s name is Xavier!
We are white and I didn’t know/don’t think of it as a Black name. |
| This is OP—thanks so much for everyone’s reactions (even those who don’t like the name or take my husband’s side). It seems like it really is a multi-ethnic name that DH and I have just encountered in very different contexts. I do like the name a lot and it has some sentimental meaning for me (my late grandpa’s middle name), but it’s not the only good name out there and probably not worth a big fight! |
| It's also Spanish. Hab ee er |
| Go for it! It's a great name. St. Francis Xavier. |
| What does the name mean? I never met a non black person named Ebony so as long as it doesn’t mean black in another language go ahead and use it |
| It doesn’t strike me as belonging to any particular ethnicity. The only Xavier I’ve run across is a caucasian, Irish-American, Catholic teenager. |
| I'm Irish Catholic, DH is black, our son is Xavier, and this thread is cracking me up. |
I'm not exaggerating when I say folks on DCUM say this about EVERY single name that is posted. I seriously would like to know which names ARE widely liked amongst DCUMers. It's a completely normal (established, spelled correctly) name. The dramatics are crazy. |
| It’s a Hispanic/Latino name |
|
Xavier is not of African or Black American origin. Just because a name becomes popular within a certain racial group/community does not mean that race owns the name.
Frankly, the whole cultural appropriation concept is getting out of control. A few weeks ago, I saw a poster on here state that it would be cultural appropriation for a WHITE American to use an obviously GERMAN or FRENCH name. People have lost the plot and gone full-blown psycho and illogical in their attempts to be sensitive. |
