Buy a University

Iona College (which ironically happens to be very close to Purchase)

I believe you meant Iona University.

I think BU is good at this, though I'm not a huge fan of the school.

Sorry - you're right - didn't get the memo on the upgrade.

University of Missouri (Mizzou)

Affordable with great out of state merit and a really nice college town.

The counselor is spot/on to suggest this as a fit for hands-on experience. Columbia, Mo. is a cute college town, too.

Agree.

It is one of the top public universities in the country for journalism.

+1. Penn State and volunteer for THON for hands-on experience. It is the largest student-run philanthropy and raises north of $15M each year for childhood cancer.

Considering an Ithaca College and Syracuse visit;
Arizona State/Chapman/USC (just to see it, but it's a reach) visit
DePaul and Northwestern visit;
Emerson/NYU/Fordham visit.

Anything else not to miss in those areas?
Counselor is recommending Mizzou but my kid isn't interested in living in Missouri.

Your counselor is an idiot.

Chapman is the only one on your list that is a smart choice for that major.

Just have your kid go instate this is silly

Sorry, what? Mizzou is very well-known and highly thought of in the fields of journalism, media, communications, etc. You sound completely ignorant.

Another great choice.

If you're open to a southern swing, Florida (UF), Miami, and Georgia all have strong media/communication schools.

Was going to say UF J-school, very big alumni network throughout the U.S.

The College of Communication at BU (Boston University) has a strong reputation.

Already stated above. Be original.

Missouri or Ithaca

My kid is at the Newhouse school at Syracuse and you really cannot beat the production experience they provide. Not only is there state of the art equipment for the students to use, but they also train on older equipment knowing that in media, many new grads end up in small media markets that use outdated cameras.
