Good schools for media/communications with hands-on experience?

Kid is interested in graphic design or TV/video production. Solid student, but likely wouldn't get into USC or Northwestern.

Considering an Ithaca College and Syracuse visit;
Arizona State/Chapman/USC (just to see it, but it's a reach) visit
DePaul and Northwestern visit;
Emerson/NYU/Fordham visit.

Anything else not to miss in those areas?
Counselor is recommending Mizzou but my kid isn't interested in living in Missouri.

Your counselor is an idiot.

Chapman is the only one on your list that is a smart choice for that major.

Just have your kid go instate this is silly

Elon is known for this and very hands on, their communications school is highly rated.

You should go visit Mizzou’s TV studio—saw it this year and it’s amazing (from this parent and journalist perspective—the students who are training on it every day are getting fantastic hands-on experience, as are the students working at the local daily paper). The counselor is spot/on to suggest this as a fit for hands-on experience. Columbia, Mo. is a cute college town, too.

+1. My kid visited Mizzou’s Journalism facilties this fall, and is now commited to the school. She was quite impressed with the number of hands on opportunities, and the “Mizzou Mafia” network. They also matched in-state tuitiion for her. The OP’s kid is not interested though.

Iona College (which ironically happens to be very close to Purchase)

Temple if interested in the sports side of production. It's my kid's first choice after Syracuse. Third is Ithaca(then UMD in-state).
