Cover it up with pillows/towels and gently cover kid's ears with your hands.

Exactly this. I went on a new daily inhaler, and the doctors gave me, a smart 36yo woman, a spacer because they're more reliable that way, regardless of age.

We've gone back and forth on this topic with our pediatrician and pulmonologist. Pediatrician insists that inhaler/spacer is better. Pulmonologist insists nebulizer is better. Over the winter, DS (age 12) was having an asthma attack for which he ended up having to go to the hospital. In practice, inhaler/spacer was less effective than nebulizer. There's a reason that hospitals nebulize kids when they come in and are in trouble vs using an inhaler.

Just use extra long tubing and put the unit in another room

I don't think any of them are quiet. I have COPD, and I just got a new Trek S portable. It is very loud. When I put it on my desk to do a treatment, I have to keep it in the bag, because it will vibrate off the edge if I don't.

I use a really heavy blanket to cover ours while it is running. Seems to muffle the sound enough.

Try putting noise cancelling headphones on

Some of them have filters that can be replaced. Google our manufacturer to see if yours does. It might help.

Nebulizer treatments have always worked better for me, because on top of the severe asthma i have vocal chord dysfunction and a few other things. The nebulizer vials are the equivalent of roughly four strong inhaler puffs, and it gives you more time to get enough medication down to keep things from closing up too tightly. If heart rate stuff becomes a problem, levalbuterol can work, but it is less effective in my experience (two hours between treatments instead of four). I do like using my inhaler when I don't have the option of using a neb, but when given the choice I always go for the nebulizer.

I also have COPD and I agree with the post about the Trek S. It does vibrate, and it is loud. I suppose you could surround it with pillows. It's not something I've needed to do since I'm an adult and don't need it to be quiet, but as far as a nebulizer goes, it is a really good one, and it's portable. And for those of you who think that an inhaler works better, you have? obviously never been suffocating.

Nebulizers are always better. Period. The delivery . inhalers cause damage. Only good for emergencies. Even after emergency still use a nebulizer albuterol. If your very dry there are also saline for the nebulizer but you still need a prescription for it. Saline by neb will never replace xeopenex but it helps with dryness even in nose. Lubs up breathing to cough better.
