He didn't tell you about anything unusual in your bloodwork, because there isn't anything. Unfortunately, extreme thinning in brows is quite normal from mid-40s on. There are over-the-counter things to try, like Vegamour and OTC minoxidil, and there are things a cosmetic derm can do/prescribe. It's one of the #1 things that will make you look old, but people don't realize it. It happens to all of us, and it is unlikely that you are dying, or even that there is anything wrong with you beyond not being 22 anymore. |
| Put minoxidil on them in the morning with a q tip- not at night or you will have hair growing all over your face. Ask me how I know 🤣😂🤣 |
That is because you are a middle-aged woman and expected to just cope. Do you have any other symptoms? |
| You need to get a complete thyroid work up. Eyebrow thinning, particularly on the outer part of the brows, is a classic sign of hypothyroidism. |
| I use an eyebrow pencil now. I used to be so proud of my perfect eyebrows when I was younger. Age comes for all of us. 😭 |
| Aging is a disease, like cancer, that can be halted and even reversed. |
+1 Losing the outer third is a common sign of a thyroid issue. |
Please learn to read your blood test, especially iron and ferritin. What a doctor labels normal can be ABnormal for some people. Just remember that all the general guidelines for what is normal is based on men who are larger and do not menstruate. In 40s, it’s common to bleed heavily. If that happened to you, you might be low in ferritin. A doctor will say you are normal above 7 or 12 in ferritin. However, you need to be above 60 for hair to grow and your doctor probably won’t tell you that. |
OP here. I got a thyroid workup and am still waiting to talk to my doctor, but my ferritin levels are showing high (225), whereas UIBC is showing low (120). Will update once I hear more. I love my doc to pieces, but he did laugh when I told him I was concerned about my eyebrows! So, yes, being 46 and having your health concerns disregarded is a thing! |
| Eyebrows falling out is a health cue. Talk to you PCP. |
With that combination, you could actual have iron overload (hemochromatosis), which like the opposite problem of low levels of ferritin can cause thinning eyebrows. This is a problem that should be addressed. |
| Any update, OP? In the meantime, you could try prescription Latisse - it’s an eyelash serum. It really irritated my eyelids, so I use it on my eyebrows and it works great! GL! |

Glad you're getting your labs checked. In the meantime, get this from CVS: Generic Women's Rogain foam. I put it on with a eyelash spoolie once a day.
It's less expensive than serums and doesn't make my eyebrows darker like the serum did. https://www.cvs.com/shop/cvs-women-s-5-minoxidil-foam-for-hair-regrowth-prodid-1710168?skuId=722347&cgaa=QWxsb3dHb29nbGVUb0FjY2Vzc0NWU1BhZ2Vz&cid=ps_bea_pla&gclsrc=aw.ds&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=21205757756&gclid=CjwKCAiAssfLBhBDEiwAcLpwfprUP-8L4X79zuN2uPHqaeU8tgYMmdz8sspZboFrj-jKsavr_yKw-xoCy60QAvD_BwE |
