The articles I see show the following:

Customers: Requested extra caramel

Employee: Referred to the female customers hijab as a "witchcraft bandanna" (Note: I would say this is the comment that provoked the situation)

Customer: Referred to the hair as "sexualized"

Employee: Screamed a diatribe that included the "N-word".

Even if the customer had started it, which doesn't seem to have happened. Even if they had said something horrible, and I would consider their comment to be responding in kind, not escalating. This was a public place with lots of people around. No one else there deserved to have the N word flying around at high volume. I can't really think of anything that would justify screaming that word.
