What’s a “so-called” Catholic?

According to The National Catholic Registry.

The poll found that Catholic voters trusted Trump more than Harris on immigration by a massive 25-point margin, 57% to 32%. It also found that Catholics trusted Trump more on the economy by a 19-point margin, 55% to 36%.

Both Trump and his running mate, Ohio Sen. JD Vance, courted the Catholic vote heavily in the last few weeks of the election. In late October, Trump called Harris “destructive to Christianity” and said Catholics are “treated worse than anybody.” In that same week, Vance published an op-ed in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, accusing Harris of “prejudice against Catholics.”

Apparently these Catholics don’t know their history of Catholic immigrants being
second-class citizens to the Protestants who got here earlier. I wonder how they feel now when they see immigrants dragged along the streets worse than stray dogs.

The states included in the NBC poll were Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Wisconsin.

+1 Maybe they are too young/ignorant to know how much catholics were maligned in this country for a hundred years, including catholics from Italy, Poland, Ireland, etc...

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Vance, someone who converted to Catholicism two business days ago, writing an op-ed about catholic discrimination reminds me of the Seinfeld episode where Tim Wattley starts making Jewish jokes right after he converted to Judaism.

Yes Christians in general and Catholics in particular are ok with Trump. They support him. I’m not sure how they deal with the cognitive dissonance between the two ideologies. Christianity today is really about hating people.

Do you always make generalizations about large numbers of people? It must be hard for you to process nuance. There are conservative MAGA type Catholics, and there are progressive social justice Catholics. Look at our Supreme Court--6 of the justices are Catholic, and while 5 of them are MAGA-esque, Sonia Sotomayor seems to be a social justice Catholic.

Pope criticizes US bid to 'break apart' US-Europe alliance, insists on Europe role in Ukraine peace
ROME (AP) — Pope Leo XIV insisted Tuesday that Europe must have a role in any Ukraine peace deal and criticized what he said was the Trump administration’s effort to “break apart” the long-standing U.S.-European alliance.

When did progressives become so dim? I despair for my side sometimes because so many progressives are just so incapable of complex thought.

So-called Catholics... MAGA Catholics are to me by and large frauds.

A person can strive to call themselves anything, but in the Gospels Christ gives a very clear standard: you follow Him by doing what He commanded. And in Matthew, Mark, and Luke, those commands are not ambiguous. Jesus tells His followers to welcome the stranger, yet the MAGA worldview celebrates the expulsion of refugees and migrants. He commands us to feed the hungry, while MAGA rhetoric mocks the poor and pushes to cut food assistance. He tells us to care for the sick, but MAGA politics defends a system that leaves millions unable to afford basic medical care. He tells us to honor and protect the elderly, while MAGA leaders openly discuss gutting Social Security and Medicare.

And there are even more places where the contrast is stark. Christ teaches “blessed are the peacemakers,” yet MAGA culture glorifies aggression and political violence. Christ commands humility, while MAGA elevates pride, domination, and self‑exaltation. Christ warns repeatedly against wealth, greed, and storing up treasure, while MAGA ideology treats wealth as proof of virtue and poverty as personal failure. Christ teaches love of neighbor, love of enemy, and care for the least among us, all of which run directly against the politics of resentment and exclusion that MAGA promotes.

In short, you cannot truly claim to be a follower of Christ if you are MAGA. And that includes Catholics. MAGA is the exact opposite of everything Christ taught.

Amen. Anyone who is MAGA is not a true Christian no matter what BS they cry to the heavens. Their beliefs and behaviors are completely antithetical to what Christ taught. Period. End of discussion.

As a Catholic, I find it very confusing when someone claims they are Catholic yet they support Trump. Many also practically worship Trump as an idol. What do they think Jesus meant by all he said??
