Some prefer it to UMDCP based on size. STEM is strong

Untrue! It really all depends on your student.

UMBC is an excellent university and getting in is out of reach even to many good students.

75% acceptance rate. It’s within reach to most that apply.

-------------
UM -- Baltimore County and College Park --
both strong public research MD universities.

Both offer excellent science/tech programs.

UMD College Park:
larger
more nationally recognized
seen as a bigger "party school"
more Greek life
big-time sports

UMBC:
smaller
known for its "nerd culture"
strong academics
R1 research status
close faculty interaction
smaller classes
excels in interdisciplinary studies
diverse campus
less Greek life

Is it a test required school?

In addition to grade point average and optional standardized test scores, the strength of curriculum, class rank, and other achievements as well as essay will be considered.

Total First-Time First-Year Student Enrollment
2,271

Average HS GPA
4.06

Average SAT Score
1320 (Combined)
661 (Reading/Writing)
659 (Math)

Average ACT Composite Score
27.75

46.24% Women;
53.76% Men

Those are very high GPA standards.

Those are pretty high stats. UMBC is probably out of reach for most 18 year-olds in America in 2025.

You have no way of concluding that because for all you know, every applicant submitted scores.

Thousands don't get accepted every year. It certainly isn't automatic.

Actually I do. The Common Data set says in 2024 37% submitted SAT and 6% submitted ACT. If you know anything about college admissions you know that any test optional school is going to have inflated scores.

also from CDS in case anyone is interested the admit rate is around 45%
