Stocking up on pasta?

Anonymous
No, we eat whole wheat pasta and I don't think that is as shelf stable as white pasta. I have also made my own pasta. And as others ahve noted, pasta is cheap so while a tariff makes it more expensive, it's still going to be very affordable.

Yes, it's a big deal when you take the sum total of everything that will increase, but I'm not concerned about stocking up on any one item.

Yes, even the good Italian pasta is a couple of bucks, and presumably the wholesale price (which is what tariffs are based on) is less than that. So tariffs might add a $1 or at most $2. Unless you eat a lot of pasta and have lots of extra storage space, it's not worth stocking up.

I’m a fairly thrifty person but I’m not squirreling away $2 pasta in fear of tariffs.

Nope. I believe in a global economy. And you should too, because we export a lot of food and that's pretty much a catastrophe right now. Also, did you know most medications are manufactured overseas? We are not able to do this here. Should we stop those too? Try to understand economics.

Most don't.

So avoid Trader Joe's while hoarder parents shop in the next weeks

I like DeCecco which is now $3-$4 a box when not on sale. If it doubled it would be $6-8 which feels excessive so I will stock up but I’m not going to be hoarding it. I have been wanting to learn to make my own pasta so maybe this will motivate me if the tarrifs are as bad as I’m hearing. But I think DJT will cave on them.

Costco has bulk pasta

TJ pasta is imported.

TJ's dry pasta used to be from Italy. Now some (most? all?) of it is sourced from Egypt, starting a few months ago. At least this is the case at my local TJ's (Detroit area). Haven't tried any of the new stuff yet, but I've seen reviews on the internet saying it's not as good.

I make my own pasta. It isn't hard.

This.
But it's pasta OP. That's about the cheapest food you can find. It's just ground up grass seed and oil slop.

When are prices going up?

I am so sick of pasta. I really feel I have met my lifetime limit on it. Obviously not worried about a price increase.

After the beef and coffee ones come down for the holidays. But then TACO

Yes because we are worried the Italian pasta companies won't ship it here. There were some news stories about that. So we have some in a Rubbermaid bin in the cellar.

Very few brands are included in the potential tariffs, noted in the Commerce Department filing.

Lots of fluff news right now on this topic.

This article contains the list.

And then, of course, is the likelihood that Trump will take this tariff off, as he has reduced so many others.
