Can’t afford to be essential

Fed here, and this is not true. Come this Saturday, I will have missed two full and one quarter of paychecks.

This don’t blame the shutdown for your terrible money management.

Quick tips: call your mortgage company to let them know. You may be eligible for assistance included deferred payments. It takes a long time for anything to happen to your home, but your credit may take a ding, so just keep in touch. Deferment will help with that. Pay this last.

Call your car company to let them know. Many are offering deferred payments for furloughed workers, up to 2 months. You’ll still owe this money but not right now. Get the deferment and pay what you can toward it so it’s not a big balloon when it ends but you’ve put some of it off.

Pay the insurance now, because if that lapses, you are in trouble if something goes wrong and breaking the law if driving.

Good luck. I’m sorry you are dealing with this.

I think this poster can blame the shutdown for being forced to work without pay, a situation that is neither normal nor acceptable.

That still doesn’t equal two missed mortgage payments.

I am sorry OP.

You (and everyone else) should not even have to deal with this.

I am sorry some are judging.

Your post brings up a good point. There are a lot of food resources. I am not aware of any gas or transportation resources. There are a lot of places essential employees work that are not easily accessible by public transportation.

DCUM what can be done to help? Are there any organizations or groups that could provide assistance? Gas cards?

I am sorry, OP. This administration has no loyalty to anyone and just doesn't care about the American people.

I simply can’t afford to get to the office. I need a real job yesterday.
I am in DC metro and don’t want help to keep this job. This is so fd up.

Do you have any interest or skills for childcare, elder care roles? Always a shortage.

I hear they might reopen this week now that the election's done.

Ironic to be saying this on a message board where several of the channels have people talking about how tough they have it on $450k HHI when you're talking to GS-grade feds, many of whom make a lot less than private sector.

What a crappy thing to say. You sound miserable.

I’m so sorry. I love Feds and appreciate your work. You deserve better.

Why not? If you need 1 full paycheck to cover mortgage, then October payment wouldn't have gone through as a full payment. Same with November (so far). Or you split two paychecks to cover mortgage, and pay bills/life expenses with the rest. DC area isn't a cheap place to live.

Stop working for the government. Seriously, the government is a parasite, and employees like you are what they use to suck the life out of this great country.
