WASHINGTON — Amazon is set to announce a new round of major job layoffs, multiple media outlets reported Monday afternoon.

According to Reuters, Amazon plans to cut as many as 30,000 corporate jobs starting on Tuesday. The outlet cited three people familiar with the matter.

While that figure would represent a small percentage of Amazon’s 1.55 million total employees, it would be nearly 10% of the company’s roughly 350,000 corporate employees

The elite view is that all outsourcing is good. The middle class manufacturing job loss? No problem. Up skill.

The elites enjoyed the low cost goods while the low middle income suffered.

This is on both Republican and Democratic elites.

I spoke to a friend in an unrelated industry and AI is eliminating the need for middle management. Their company is just waiting for people to leave and not rehiring vs doing a mass layoff.

Just another blow to the DMV economy. There are a lot of Amazon employees in Virginia.

This. It’s AI shrinking the work force. This will be happening across the board at companies, not just at Amazon.

Amazon is one of the largest sponsors of H-1B visas, employing over 10,000 workers with this visa in fiscal year 2025.

but this is what Democrats wanted when Biden expanded H1B and OPT. These programs are working exactly as designed, to help American companies replace US citizens with cheap temporary foreign labor.

and the Democrats wonder why they keep losing

Trump has killed the economy with tariffs, inflation and layoffs. Only the millionaires and richer are spending now.

This is not recession. This is the new tech. All of them are buying data centers and building models. Less $$ for the traditional workforce. As a bonus, they will say they did it because their AI products are so effective. Free advertising.

and out own government helps them replace US citizens with cheap foreign labor.

when will people wake up. but usually people do not care until it happens to them.

The Optional Practical Training (OPT) for foreign students who have graduated from American universities allows all foreign graduates to receive a 12-month work permit, but STEM graduates are eligible for an additional 24-month work permit.  Businesses are using this program to circumvent H-1B visa caps and American and legal immigrant graduates are losing out:

OPT has grown more than 400% in recent years and is bigger than the H-1B program.
From 2007 to 2017, employers hired 2.5 million OPT and CPT workers.
Employers don't have to pay payroll taxes on OPT employees, making them 15.3% cheaper to hire.  The FICA fund loses out on $2.5 billion each year due to this.
OPT visas are not merit-based and have no restrictions or limitations.
Fewer than 50% of U.S. STEM graduates are finding jobs in STEM fields, which is a direct result of the OPT program.
The OPT program is harming American STEM grads by giving companies a financial incentive to hire temporary foreign workers, even though the government is actively encouraging American students to study for STEM degrees.

https://cis.org/Report/History-Optional-Practical-Training-Guestworker-Program

The Optional Practical Training (OPT) program gives businesses a financial incentive to hire foreign college graduates instead of American and legal immigrant graduates. Employers do not have to pay payroll taxes and the OPT employees do not have to pay FICA withholding, making these employees significantly less expensive to hire. The OPT program is responsible for the inability of most American STEM graduates to find jobs in STEM fields -- fewer than 50% of STEM graduates are finding STEM jobs.

Chinese made the good stuff too when Walmart supplier managers kept a tight leash on the suppliers.

Try reading. This is their biggest layoff ever, even bigger than the COVID layoff in 2022

So! And still not a Trump issue!

Largest layoff ever if it's 30k employees. Prior to that, the largest was when they laid off about 27k in 2022 (Covid).

FICA is used to fund Medicare and Social Security, something a temporary worker is not entitled to receive.

Would it be better if we pay to train these fresh graduates and then kick them out, meaning they provide no economic output to the US?
