Best Place for College Son to Get a Suit for $500?

DH even had them measure and custom make a dress shirt. It was cheaper than the shirts off the rack.

They usually have several salesmen roaming the floor to help you pick out a suit, even match ties to shirts. Some females too, but they all know their stuff.

Blue suits really seem to be popular right now with light cordovan shoes.

I was in a courthouse recently and there were 6 lawyers - every one of them had a blue suit on. I watched ESPN with 5 analyzers - again all 5 were wearing some shade of a blue suit. Not a grey, black or tan suit to be seen.

NP and I’m curious (as my son will be shopping soon), were the suits dark navy blue, or more medium blues? To me dark navy is the classic first suit color, but I wasn’t sure if you meant guys are trending to lighter shades of blue.

It's all shades of blue, but a lot of light-light blue, though. I like the dark navy look too. I just googled to see if I could find the 5 sports analysts all wearing blue suits and this courtroom photo showed up. This is what I mean - not only are all the men in blue suits, but the 2 women are as well!

The shade he wants is called High Blue, per a salesman at Nordstrom.

Suit Supply in Georgetown is superior to Men's wear house.

Ugh. Only Trumpers wear that shade of blue suiting. My DH and sons would NEVER.

OP have him get a nice charcoal suit. Many shades of charcoal, and the suit will be classic forever. Steer away from black (looks like staff) and navy is okay for a second suit later.

I agree with the suggestion to get dark grey, unless he looks absolutely terrible in that color. Then navy blue would be my second choice. Nothing trendy.

That's the shade I've been seeing most often. I like that look too, along with dark navy.

We got our tall 6'.2" slim built a suit at Kohl's.

We went to Nordstrom's and didn't find his size, then we went to Men's Warehouse and the cheapest was $350+.

JCrew had some suits but not a lot...

We went to Kohl's and got a Ultra-Slim suit for less than $200.

If you are willing to go up to $650, the Bonobos jetsetter is excellent. They have all sorts of different sizing and colors. Athletic, slim, etc. He can go to a fit shop in Bethesda or Georgetown and be fit perfectly. You get 20% off your first purchase so that should get you close. Navy or grey for a first suit.

you might have to go a little higher but DS got his suit at Nordstrom (shirt, tie, shoes, etc at Nordstrom Rack). Nordstrom is great at alterations - and will alter again for as long as you own the suit.

Anonymous wrote:Macy’s is a good suggestion. Nordstrom Rack sometimes has good options and they have a tailor (call to find out when). I tried Jos A Bank for my son and the price was ok but the styles were baggy and too old.

Macy's. Kenneth Cole Reaction is an ok brand for a nice looking young man's suit. My son has 2.

We never had luck at Men's Wearhouse, Nordstrom's Rack, or J Crew/J Crew Outlet.

Go to the biggest Macy's you can find for maximum size selection.

Also recommend reading up on hem lengths. Men have gotten very fashionable and now there are many options. A trendy tailor may hem pants short and you need a fancy sock and shoe game to be that stylish.

PP. Dark navy blue is out of fashion for younger men right now. My son has a grey suit and a black suit. Every true navy suit he tried on made him look like he was pretending to be a middle-aged dad. I don't like the trendy blues so we didn't go there. In his size, they were too fashion forward. I also didn't want to buy the brown shoes that go with that color blue, etc. I wasn't able to find a nice navy blazer either. We'll wait until he needs more than 2 suits to try again.
