Manhattan Institute New Rankings

Anonymous
It is the methods. For example...

I just looked at the methods and under Student Experience there is a subscore for Jewish Campus Climate but not for absolutely any other group, race, gender, anything. So we can see where they add and subtract points.

Come on.

In no universe is the University of Florida the number one school in the country.

FSU is #7 and Harvard #37. Ok...

Top 3:
1 University of Florida
2 University of Texas at Austin
3 University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill

The Manhattan Institute’s City Journal looked at 100 colleges, assessing them on qualities that many students and families are concerned about, including free speech, the school’s approach to politics on campus, and students’ professional success after graduation. Schools that have demonstrated ideological pluralism among the faculty received higher marks. Same for a vibrant and inclusive campus social life. Student tolerance for controversial speakers was another plus.

The Manhattan Institute is [b]a hard right-wing think tank and not a credible arbiter of education quality. The arrogance in these rankings is palpable.

false. Google it. The Manhattan Institute is not hard right. It is moderate to conservative and focuses on economic choice and personal responsibility. Google it. When I worked there, the President wasn’t even a conservative (which is very different from MAGA and hard-right). The Institute has done some excellent work such as Betsy McCoy’s discovery that Hilary Clinton’s health care initiative would NOT allow one to select their own doctor, which resulted in the end of her healthcare plan and her meddling as First Lady in presidential affairs.

Thanks for fact-checking this one, against the OP’s ridiculous exaggeration.

Why? I’d think you’d be proud of an institute here you don’t need to self censor.

I don’t think y’all understand this ranking. And yes it’s very useful for some of us who have kids that value Chicago principles, don’t want to self-censor, and want to be on a campus with pluralism of thought.

Their stance is an exaggeration but not ridiculous. I am a 35 year republican (not since Trump). Manhattan Institute isn't MAGA but they are generally to the right of what used to be the mainstream republican party.

I personally think the overall list is nonsense, but you can filter for only the things you care about.

If you filter it for just say career outcomes, then it produces a drastically different list.

Very helpful list ! Thank you.

Even though my top 3 are not ranked among the Top 50 schools on this list, I do recognize the value and accuracy of this list.

No, here is your fact check.

It was founded by Antony Fisher and William Casey. It is part of the State Policy Network, a coalition of right-wing think tanks.

It has strong ties to the Koch brothers to the tune of $3 million in funds from the Koch network.

It took funds from the tobacco industry and worked hard to combat perceptions that smoking is dangerous, including “research” calling medical findings “junk science.”

Currently it fights action on climate change.

It was a leading antagonist promoting the phantom menace of Critical Race Theory and gender ideology, including sponsoring “work” by Christopher Rufo. It similarly an attack dog on DEI.

Ita current chairman is Paul Singer, a vulture capitalist.

Nothing about it is moderate. It has a veneer of academic civility but it is every bit as rabidly right wing and anti-American as the current Trump regime.

Yeah, a glance at Manhattan Institute’s policy stances, publication, and news releases shows this isn’t a centrist organization, it’s pretty right-wing conservative (even if it maintains some healthy distance from MAGA). With all the assaults on free speech and higher ed in the state of FL, I’m very skeptical of how University of Florida is #1 on their list.

Great information. However, every rating & ranking seem to have a slant or agenda. The same folks who criticize this list, probably also criticize US News rankings, WSJ/THE rankings, etc.

Sure, but the complaints there are related to discussions about what measures constitute academic quality. Any list which has Arizona state in the top 15 and Alabama in the top 35 isn't remotely credible. In fairness I actually like most of the schools, it is the sorting methodology which is just bonkers.
