Do I (furlough employee) need to file for Virginia unemployment benefit?

I did this when I was furloughed for 6 months. Company was in MD, I live in VA.

The cap for me at that time was $10k. But it’s $10k I wouldn’t have otherwise received.

It’s worth it if you can deal with the bureaucracy.

You’ve paid into the unemployment system. It’s time for it to pay you.

But for fed, there is back pay (traditionally, now backpay is required by law, if they follow the law. It was signed by Trump during his first term, after 35 days of government shutdown).

DC can pay me unemployment benefit now, but I will need to return everything to DC later on, not worth. It will make tax turn form complicated.

the problem is that they are threatening to not pay folks that have been furloughed.

so if you are fine with an unpaid leave of absence, don't file. if $1600/mo is helpful or needed if we don't get backpay, then file. you will still only owe taxes where you live.

I am not very concerned about their threat not paying furloughed employees, I just think it is their strategy to put pressure on D to open government.

If they don't pay, we can win the case in court.

I don't think I can claim unemployment benefit back from October 1, the shutdown has lasted 23 days, it is extremely unlikely to last more than 45 days. It could re-open by the end of this month or early November. It is kinda "late" to apply for unemployment benefit while government may open in a few days.

Then don't apply.

So....I'm a furloughed fed, considering applying for unemployment. One of the requirements for receiving unemployment is that I be "actively looking for work." But I'm not, because I'm not allowed to take another job, because I can't get ethics clearance.

How are others handling this point?

Somewhere on the site or in the forms it says this requirement is waived for those applying due to the furlough since, as you state, we of course cannot seek work

This is one reason why my DC application is still under review, because I answered "no, I can't take another job if offered." I wish they provided additional options to people who checked "government shutdown." Or any guidance at all.

I don't understand why you answered no. You can always quit and take another job. Just because you don't want to or plan to is no reason to throw sand in the gears by saying you're not eligible to work.
