Glimpse videos?

Don't read off a script....per this Duke kid who saw their application (you'll get points taken off).

What happens if a student is waitlisted at an ED school after submitting their glimpse video there? It looks like they can re-record the video again.

Yes mine redid the video after (deferred in ED) last year for the RD schools. Was admitted in RD.

I understood deferral meant you’re qualified but they have insufficient space…but can be reconsidered. I doubt a redo helped in any way. (LOCI with new info is different)

I know some people use the Glimpse video as a Why Major video - for schools like Vanderbilt, which didn't have that last year.

Our college counseling office said it’s a way to show demonstrated interest.

They are wrong. You can only make one glimpse video for November deadlines and another for January deadlines. For those in November, you don't need to demonstrate interest to your ED school (if any) since ED is the ultimate demonstration of interest. You might not want to tailor the video to a specific EA school either because then what would other EA schools and/or ED school think when they see the video? For those in Janauary, the same applies. The only time you can customize your video for a specific school is if that school is the only one you will apply to for a particular admission round.

There’s a way to show demonstrated interest with the glimpse video - by allocating a star. You were only given two stars though. This was last cycle. This would apply to the regular decision round only, I believe.

My kid did use the star in a new video recording for RD in the last cycle and was admitted to a T10. However, I think a lot of people can be admitted without doing the video as well.

For schools that do track demonstrated interest (like a Middlebury, Northwestern or Duke) - there are more nuanced ways for them to calculate the likelihood of yield. This is one of them.

It’s not black-and-white though. If this plays to your kids strength, you should definitely do it. Why not??

Did the ED school see the new video? Or could they access only the original video?

DD submitted a video last week for Duke ED. She feels so many kids are exaggerating their ECs that she wanted to tell a 60 second story about hers to show it is authentic. I think it was a good idea but then I wasn't too involved. She rerecorded it once or twice before submitting. It was not a huge burden or anything.

Why aren’t they doing it? It is another chance to tell the admissions officer something new about you. Personally, I would make my kid do it.

NP: I see plenty of people say they did it and didn’t get in and didn’t do it and did get in. It’s not definitive…but could help.
