Grades First Quarter Senior Year

People, you can Google your schools to check.

Typically T20 will defer ED to see full semester grades if a C. Was there a reason? Something you want to talk about in the additional information section for that school only

No, you really can’t. Some will not say on their website but will ask for 1Q grades. This happened for my kid applying ED to a NESCAC school.

OP, I would advise you to have your kid email their admissions rep acknowledging the bad grade and explaining (in a way that accepts responsibility) and letting them know she has a plan of action to improve the grade.

Senior yr grades dont matter much - except for schools like UCs which dont do ED, EA - and decisions come out in march.

I mean...it's not good. But she will still get into college somewhere. How many days in the semester? She should talk to the teacher about ways to bring up her grade. And is she in the wrong level? Does she need to drop down a level? Why is she getting a C?

That is not true. Most schools at least request mid-year reports, for a reason. And kids have been rescinded or received warning letters in spring/summer after submitting senior grades. Reddit had a number of stories about this last year.

No one can give specific advise without knowing the schools being targeted.

If already admitted, a C won't elicit a recision of offer. But I think it would definitely matter for evaluations in progress. And almost all EA/ED schools will be making their decisions after first quarter grades are available.

So you can hope that your kid's preferred school doesn't request first quarter grades (a lot don't). But I think if they *do* request first quarter grades, then they do that because they care about them and a C will make a pretty big difference. Also, I don't think French 5 will be viewed as such a hard class that it would get a pass (maybe if the C is in like AP physics or AP Chem...)

So I wonder... if this is a school your kid absolutely loves and you think they will request the grades and the grade will definitely be a C, then maybe consider withdrawing the EA application and applying RD (where they will only see the semester grade).

Which ED schools request the first quarter report card?
Does any one have a list?

We are in same boat with a different class. Our DC can drop the class until the end of October and doesn’t need the credit to graduate. School counselor has advised us DC needs a B by end of this month or we should drop. We are at a DMV private if that matters.

A C is not going to change anything at this stage.

Unclench.

If your kid does this, I’d recommend brevity. Don’t come across as defensive.

Our private automatically sends Q1 senior grades to all ED and EA schools. Even though we are a semester based school, they send what kid has earned to date. Very stressful for my senior last year who bombed an early physics test. Big wake up call and panic for them. Teacher was super strict and offers no retakes, extra credit like other schools. Kid studied like crazy, got a tuor and got grade up to a b- for Q1 grade (barely). Lots of worry but kid was accepted to their super reach ed school. I think the lower grade wasn't as hurtful bc kid was not applying for anything science related.

Thanks for this.

My kid was told they do not send 1st quarter grades for ED and then counselor just informed for this school they do. He has one borderline grade- might be first B (quarter ends today). Also no retakes, etc. He is freaking out since all 3 years was all As that this one B in first quarter (which is a high B) and by full semester will likely be an A (teacher always grades papers the hardest 1st!quarter) is going to squash acceptance.

It depends entirely on how high she’s aiming. Below T-30 should be fine.

This was my son's experience. Accepted ED2 at a school around the Top 30 as a social science student with a C in Calculus.
