Grades First Quarter Senior Year

DD is taking French 5 and is looking at a C first quarter. Says the rest of her grades are "fine," as is her overall HS GPA. She thinks she can bring it up to a B by the end of the semester but is worried about impact on EA applications and a possible ED. Any thoughts on this?

Will she have her final first quarter grade before the EA deadline? If the deadline is before the end of first quarter, they won’t know her grade.

EA schools never ask for senior grades.

ED schools generally do ask for them to be sent separately when they're available in November (with some exceptions) and may not be happy but you can't worry about it.

TJ does not update the transcript till end of 1st semester (thank you!), which is Jan 31

So I am hoping DC gets a few admits before that.

OP here and thank you. This is not about TJ. I know DDs school will send the quarter grades if requested. Just hoping for some assurance that a C at this point in a tough subject like French 5 is not complete doom.

I don’t think it matters. DS got a conditional acceptance and it basically was worded that he just had to graduate, or that was my interpretation. They really only look at the grades from junior year.

It depends entirely on how high she’s aiming. Below T-30 should be fine.

Typically T20 will defer ED to see full semester grades if a C. Was there a reason? Something you want to talk about in the additional information section for that school only

Which schools want first quarter grades for ED applicants? Ivies? UVA? Michigan? Northwestern?

Some WASP schools require for an ED application; some reserve the right to request. Duke requires.

It’s school by school for ED. OP, you should check. Otherwise, the EA applications I’m familiar with ask for mid-year reports.

This. Not gonna lie. A C is a problem for elite schools. I wouldn’t apply ED to one that requires first quarter grades. You can easily Google if your target ED school does.

Yes, varies by school. Brown requires, Penn and Northwestern don’t.

Does Harvard require 1st quarter grades for SCEA?
