MIDDLE SCHOOL detention

Anonymous
My kid shows up 30 seconds after the bell for first period and will get detention. I drop off late since I can’t get there earlier on some days. Maybe our kids will have detention together OP. It’s fine, as long as it doesn’t affect their grades/learning.

There is no reason to be relying on a parent to get to middle school. Kids can either walk or be bused. So if it’s the parent’s running late, then the kid shouldn’t rely on the parent.

They don't do this for tardies if you're worried , always call them in

Why is everyone assuming the tardies are all at the beginning of the day?

You cant "call them in" if the kid is showing up late to 4th period because they're taking too long to get to their class.

In the good old days of late 1980s high school, we got after-school detention for every 3 tardies. If we got 15 of them, then we got a day of ISS. Personally, I am glad that tardies actually mean something again. Thank you, FCPS.

Attendance has been an issue for a while, made worse by COVID. I am glad to see consequences for kids being tardy, hopefully this translates to fewer absences and kids learning more.

If your kid is late because you are not getting them to school on time then get them to school on time. If they are late for other classes, tell them to avoid detention by getting to class on time.

The use of punishments such as detention, runs counter to FCPS racial equity policies.

OP: you need to report this to Gatehouse.

They’re doing your kid a favor. If there was no consequence to being late, your kid would miss instruction and they’d you would complain about their low grade.

This. Time, and being on time, is a racist construct.

I was happy when my kid got detention last year for being tardy. Some were at the beginning of the day, some during the school day. Happy to see a consequence. No issues this year so maybe it worked!

I’ve have had two kids go through middle school and I think they have had a total of 1 tardy between the two of them. There really isn’t an excuse for 5 tardies this early in the year.

If it’s a getting to school on time issue, then your family needs to get their act together

How does what work? Detention or tardies?

I didn't see that angle, but now that you say it, the OP's entitled attitude could have a DEI element to it. OP, are you a Black?
