| My college freshman got sick about a week and half ago. Waited a few days but then went to the student health center. Good thing because she needed antibiotics. Said the doctor and nurse were really nice. Made me feel a little less worried. |
| DD has an std after being in school for a month. I appreciated her telling me, but privately was saddened by it in multiple ways. |
Oh, I am sorry. On the good side, your kid trusts you. On the bad side, you have to hear this. Parenting is hard. |
Flu shots reduce your chances of flu from 2% per season to 1%, which is just a waste of time. |
| My freshman tested positive for flu at end orientation in late August. Went to health service and got tamiflu. Still coughing weeks later. Went again and said it's viral and to treat symptoms. Speaking with psrents ay lots of campuses, and kids are all sick with flu, covid, etc. Student health service is a good resource and kids should use it. Of note, I was surprised about flu in August. Our doctor suggested menengitus and other vaccines before college, but said to wait for late Sept and early august to get the flu vaccine... clearly not good advice |
Sorry. Lots of typos. Meant to say doctor suggested late September or early October for flu vaccine. |
| Mine had appendicitis freshmen year. Had to Uber to the ER. |
But it reduces the severity of the illness if you do get the flu. |
| Do you think it is necessary to get covid-19 vaccine for college students? |
| Not yet, but took Emercgen-C the first week of school and for a week during the alumni weekend thing. |
| This isn’t normal. Did any of you go to college? Do you remember being such multiple times in 4 yrs let alone multiple times per semester or within 3 weeks of move in? No one wants to hear it but we’ve done a number on kids (and adults) letting everyone catch Covid over and over - it def affects the body’s ability to then fight off other stuff. |
My kid has only had covid once and is a freshman in college. She was sick at move in (burning the candle at both ends right up until leaving) and now 6 weeks later is sick again. Is taking NyQuil for nighttime cough. Went and got covid and flu vax this week. Poor baby. |
Student health at my SLaC in the 90s had pre packed envelopes of penicillin and erythromycin. We are always sick. We lived in close quarters. I had so many sore throats, they told me one more time and they’re suggest I get my tonsils out. Never happened, whew. It was normal then. It’s normal now. Somehow, you’ve changed history in your brain. |
| My friend was a Nurse Practitioner at a university health center. She told me to remind my kids to hydrate when they have a fever and vomiting. Students would typically sleep all day when sick (roommate is at class), end up at the health center and would have to go to the ER for IV fluids. Make sure they have a thermometer (and know how to use it) and OTC meds to bring down the fever. |

OP, when they call, give importance: are they walking across campus? They are? They are functioning. Are they not? If they are resting, are they sitting up or lying down? Engaged in something or not. Or not calling you because they are sleeping an unusual amount.
