Help me to stop leaving my keys in the car

Anonymous
I once locked my keys in my car at a gas station as a teen. Called my mom to ask her to come bring me the spare key. She said no. I stood there, blocking a gas pump, not knowing what to do. 20 minutes later the lady who lived two houses down from us who I babysat for pulled up and told me "You're such an idiot" as she handed me the spare key.

I was a delicate flower and super embarrassed and angry and upset I had to say thank you to someone who'd just called me a name and angry at my mother that she wouldn't come, etc. So I vowed that would never happen again, and made it a point to hold my keys in my hands before opening the car door to get out.

And, I keep leaving my keys in the car. At the grocery store while the kids are at soccer practice, not usually in my driveway because I need my keys to get in the house.

I usually don't carry a purse, I throw my phone with DL and cc in my pocket, and when I leave my house and lock it, I end up throwing my keys in the center console and leaving them there wherever I go.

How do you all remember your keys when you have a fob and push button to start your car, and not leave them in your car?

When your car is stolen that should be enough to make you remember to take your keys with you and lock your car

Hook that onto a belt loop.

OP, I get it. My husband is exactly like you. The solution for him was to get a Tesla so he no longer had to carry a key.

My mom keeps her keys on a lanyard so she would stop losing them. Maybe you could do something like that?

Maybe this will help you: our friend's car was stolen last week when she left her keys in her car.

Why do people do this crap?

Reads as "I threw my Daughter in Law and Concealed Carry gun in my pocket."

I keep my keys on a fairly long lanyard and always throw them in front of the cupholder. I rarely carry a purse and the lanyard is long enough to put over my wrist.

Most of the time, I remember them, but I do occasionally leave them in the car accidentally. I also leave them in the car at home in the garage every day. I just don't care. If someone really wants to steal my car, go for it.

This is a problem for me when I rent a car because I’m used to having a regular key. I now tuck the fob into my waistband or bra before hitting the ignition if I don’t have pockets or a purse, but I try to wear a tiny phone sized crossbody bag when I don’t have pockets.

Do you not lock the car when you leave it? If it's a newer car, it won't lock with your keys inside. Wouldn't that be a sign to take out the keys and put them in your pocket?

Or, instead of throwing them in your console, throw them in your pocket!

I've tried that once or twice but it makes me feel like a janitor LOL.
