Oxy is ridiculously woke and plagued by weak leadership. During the Biden years, it was sued by the Office of Civil Rights, US Department of Education, DOJ, and for discrimination and failure to protect Jewish students. Oxy settled its case earlier this year. 14 Jewish students have left since Oct 6 out of fear. The situation is so bad that there’s a Facebook page for parents against anti-semitism at Occidental College. The school suffers from a series of weak Presidents with the result that the uber left faculty run the place. And its $92,650 a year. You can do better. It’s also only “moderately selective”. The school was also crushed by $30M in debt during COVID. Many programs, like football, were scrapped. It’s one of the many SLACs that may flounder and shutter in the next decade.

Damn. That's good to know. What about Whitman? Can a conservative survive there?

Fun CC fact, the actor who plays "mayhem" in the Allstate commercials is a CC alum.

Whitman’s isolation is a feature and a bug. It’s hard to get there but once you’re there, it’s got a real sense of place. Great teaching. Lists of outdoorsy kids, good dining hall, kids who are smart but chill. Feels friendly. Walla Walla is wine country, so there are lots of wineries and some pretty good restaurants, not a bad place to visit if you like wine and good food.

If it were in the northeast it would be much harder to get into. But then that would change the vibe.

Definitely one of our favorite schools of all the ones we visited.

DC visited Colorado College this summer. Very impressed on the whole. Main drawback was the first year housing—dorm we saw was subpar.

Worth a visit, for sure.

DC really liked Colorado College but it but it was so expensive. Whitman seemed similar and gave decent merit. Ended up going elsewhere.

Whitman is a terrific school -- plenty of academic challenge, excellent teaching, a beautiful location and facilities, and a great vibe. I am an alum. Your student needs to be comfortable with the small size and the relative isolation. My experience was that there is plenty happening on-campus and in the great outdoors but if your student wants an urban experience, Walla Walla is not their place. (My DD did not consider applying and is at a significantly larger school in a city.) FWIW, I think of both CC and Oxy as being suburban-ish rather than truly urban; can't speak to Macalester.

Colorado College is routinely listed as one of the schools with the most wealthy students. It is in Colorado City (more urban than most LACs); it attracts a lot of private school kids; if your kid likes the outdoors it’s the best of the lot; and kids either love or hate the block system. Your kid likely would need to ED as it’s a heavy ED school. The kids I know love it but for the most part they had some exposure to a block system so knew what they were getting into. California, Mass and NY make up about 30% of the students.

If your child's interest in social sciences might include economics, this analysis may be of interest:

Colorado College has D1 hockey. Brand new rink on campus. My guess is it probably a fun environment for students. More so than attending other d3 sports. Went to a hockey game at RIT, also a D3 school with D1 hockey, and it was awesome. Kids had tons of chants and were an organized student section. Guessing Colorado College has the same atmosphere.
