I’m surprised “Unity” is not used as a name

When I was in HS the worst bully was a girl named Charity.

We had a Charity and two girls named Chastity which looking back is an awful name for your child. Chastity I’d also not uncommon but it means sexual restraint?!

It's a lame name.

Better names would be

Right. Unity Mitford. And she was unsuccessful in shooting herself in the head. Extensive brain damage. Died of the injuries five years later in 1948, That's why the name isn't used.

I like virtue names, but Unity is a bit unusual because it seems like it's referencing more than one person, whereas Charity, Grace, Hope, Faith, etc. are all personal virtues. Unity is a communal virtue.

Virtue names are very common in parts of Africa. I had a lovely colleague named Comfort, as well as a man and two women named Patience, and a man named Prosper.

I had an ancestor named Prosper. His family had been New England Puritans, although by the time he was born they had lived in another part of the country for a couple of generations.

Unity sounds too close to Eunice, that high-strung woman on the show Mama’s Family.

I love your list!

I agree that Unity Mitford ruined the name, which was not great to begin with.

I like Effluvia, Detritus, and Debris. I actually met someone named Debris!

Unity sounds like a company or a team nowadays, or part of one: Unisys or City Name United

There's Unity Mitford.

Better personal quality/Early American names that are more common with better connotations:
Faith
Hope
Charity
Prudence
Patience
Mercy
Constance

This. Unity is pretty much ruined for being Hitler's mistress. It's like Karen or Katrina but worse.

I literally had no idea who Unity Mitford was until yesterday. Kind of a coincidence to see this question today!

I’m just learning this today. I had never heard of this person.

I knew the Mitford family had fascist connotations but did not know the specifics on Unity until recently.

I don’t think it’s fair to tar the entire Mitford family with the fascist brush. Yes, there was Unity and then her sister who married a famous British fascist, but the other 4 sisters had nothing to do with fascism.
